Oklahoma State has spent the offseason assembling one of the most talented rosters in program history.
Now Jacie Hoyt is going to find out exactly how good it is.
The Cowgirls released their 2026-27 nonconference schedule, and one game immediately jumps off the page.
At South Carolina.
On Dec. 6, Oklahoma State will walk into one of the most difficult environments in women's college basketball and face a program that has reached six consecutive Final Fours.
That's not easing a talented new roster into the season.
That's finding out where you stand.
I absolutely love it.
We've spent much of the offseason discussing how talented Oklahoma State could be.
Audi Crooks.
Liv McGill.
Stailee Heard.
A roster loaded with talent and legitimate star power.
Hoyt herself has acknowledged the other side of that conversation.
This group doesn't have nearly as much NCAA Tournament experience together as the names on the roster might suggest.
That's why a game against South Carolina is so valuable.
If Oklahoma State wants to become a program capable of playing deep into March, why wait until March to experience what that level of basketball feels like?
Go find it in December.
There's difficult.
Then there's South Carolina.
The Gamecocks have established themselves as one of the defining programs in women's college basketball, reaching the Final Four in each of the past six NCAA Tournaments.
That's the standard Oklahoma State is chasing.
Nobody should expect one December game to determine whether the Cowgirls are championship material.
But it can tell Hoyt a lot.
Can Oklahoma State handle the physicality?
Can this group execute when the environment becomes hostile?
Can all those talented individual pieces function together when they're playing an opponent capable of punishing every mistake?
Those are questions you can't answer against an overmatched opponent.
The timing makes this even better.
Four days before South Carolina, Oklahoma State will play Oklahoma in Bedlam at the Paycom Center.
Then the Cowgirls turn around and travel to Columbia.
Think about what those few days could provide.
Emotion against your rival.
A major neutral-site environment.
Then a quick turnaround before facing a national powerhouse on its home floor.
That's about as close to a postseason-style challenge as you can manufacture in early December.
This might be the most important part.
Oklahoma State doesn't need December to be comfortable.
This roster needs adversity.
Hoyt has already talked about how much building still needs to occur despite all the talent she assembled.
That's natural.
New stars have to learn roles.
Personalities have to mesh.
Players have to understand who gets the ball when the game gets tight.
Defensive communication has to become instinctive.
You discover those things when somebody punches back.
South Carolina certainly will.
This is also important for Oklahoma State fans.
Don't judge the value of this game exclusively by the final score.
Obviously, winning at South Carolina would be enormous.
Oklahoma State doesn't have to win though for the trip to be worthwhile.
What happens when South Carolina makes a run?
How does Crooks respond against elite frontcourt competition?
Can McGill control the game when Oklahoma State needs composure?
Does the defense remain connected when everything becomes difficult?
Those answers could matter considerably more in March than whether Oklahoma State leaves Columbia undefeated.
There's an easy way to protect a talented roster.
Schedule comfortable games.
Stack victories.
Build confidence.
Then hope you're ready when conference play arrives.
Hoyt appears to have little interest in doing that.
Oklahoma State's nonconference schedule includes eight home games, four matchups against in-state competition, the 28.5 Hoops Invitational and now a road trip to one of the sport's premier programs.
That's balance.
South Carolina changes the perception of the entire slate.
It says Oklahoma State isn't afraid to discover how far it still has to go.
Oklahoma State wants high expectations.
This is what comes with them.
If the Cowgirls want to become more than a talented collection of players...
If they want to compete for the Big 12...
If they want to make noise in March...
Eventually, they have to measure themselves against programs already operating at that level.
South Carolina provides exactly that opportunity.
Maybe Oklahoma State wins.
Maybe the Cowgirls learn just how much work remains.
Either outcome can make this team better.
Because Jacie Hoyt isn't building a schedule designed to protect Oklahoma State's hype.
She's building one designed to find out whether the Cowgirls can live up to it.
