Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Jack St. Ivany will be out up eight weeks after he had surgery on his left hand, the team announced Tuesday.
St. Ivany, 26, who at times has formed an effective third line with Ryan Shea , has seven assist, a career-high, in 17 games at the NHL level this season. He has also played in five AHL games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. He left Sunday's 3-2 win at Vancouver in the first period.

Dr. John Fowler, in conjunction with team physician Dharmesh Vyas, performed the operation at UPMC Mercy Hospital.
St. Ivany missed the first two months of the season because of a suspected foot injury.
Newly acquired defenseman Ilya Solovyov skated alongside Shea at practice. He could make his Penguins debut Thursday when the Chicago Blackhawks visit PPG Paints Arena.
Meanwhile, second-line forward Evgeni Malkin practiced with the team Tuesday at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. He went down in a heap on the bench at the end of Sunday's win, apparently after a celebratory bump from a teammate. However, coach Dan Muse told reporters after the game that Malkin appeared to be OK. He missed a month earlier this season because of a shoulder injury.

Parker Wotherspoon-Erik Karlsson
