Former Jackson State wide receiver Jimmy Smith Jr. will be inducted into the Black College Football Hall of Fame in its class of 2026.
Smith played at Jackson State from 1987-1991. In his college career he caught 110 passes for 2,073 yards and 16 touchdowns. He holds the JSU record for most receiving yards in a game with 239 set against Delaware State in 1991. He was named to the JSU All-Century team in 2011.
He was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the second round of the 1992 NFL Draft. He won two Super Bowls with the Cowboys. In 1995 he joined the Jacksonville Jaguars and played with them until his retirement after the 2005 season. He is the franchise's all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.
Smith is a five-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro second team selection. He led the NFL in receptions in 1999. He was inducted into the Pride of the Jaguars, the franchise's ring of honor, in 2016. He was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 2024.
Smith is from Jackson and went to Callaway High School.
Smith is a part of the six member class that includes Eddie Robinson Jr. (Alabama State), Nick Collins (Bethune-Cookman), Tyrone Poole (Fort Valley State), Rudy Hubbard (Florida A&M) and Steve Wyche (Howard).
The induction ceremony will take place June 6 in Atlanta. Inductees will also be recognized at halftime of the HBCU Legacy Bowl in New Orleans on Feb. 21.
