The Jacksonville Jaguars (10-4) took care of business Sunday against the Jets (3-11), defeating New York 48-20.
It marks the team's fifth-straight victory and will improve their odds of earning a high seed in the playoffs. The Jaguars began the week in first place in the AFC South and as the No. 3 seed in the AFC playoff standings.
The Jaguars also entered this week understanding that anything can happen on game day and did not try to underestimate the Jets, who entered the game with just three wins.
Jaguars head coach Liam Coen made that clear early in the week, and his message appeared to take hold with the team as they never let their foot off the gas even while up 48-20 with about 12 minutes left in the game.
"Yeah, we just have no room for it at all. We're just not in a place where we can say that. When you're trying to improve as a team, and there's still a lot to continue to correct on tape, it allows us to keep coaching and to keep trying to improve as a team," Coen said earlier in the week.
"Mature football teams don't let any of that creep into our minds and into our thought process. And so that's the message right now."
The Jaguars pulled most of their offensive starters from the game with 10:32 remaining.
Trevor Lawrence career day highlighted by moonshot pass to Washington
Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence executed the team's offense to near-perfection in the first half.
Just before the two-minute warning, Lawrence dropped back to throw on third-and-10. He immediately rolled out to his left, facing instant pressure from Jets defensive end Will McDonald IV before throwing a moonshot pass down the field to Parker Washington for a 33-yard pitch and catch to the Jets' 15-yard line.
Lawrence finished the first half 14 of 22 for 192 yards and three touchdowns through the air. He ran the ball four times for 48 yards and a touchdown.
Lawrence had a 131.1 passer rating at the end of the first half, which would be the best game of his career.
Lawrence and Jacksonville's offense scored a season-high 31 first-half points. It's tied for the second most in a first half in team history and their most since 2017 (31, Week 15 of 2017). Lawrence passed former Jaguars quarterback David Garrard for the third-most touchdowns in franchise history with 90 in his career.
Jacksonville's offense finished the first half with 270 yards.
Lawrence finished the game completing 20 of 32 passes for 330 yards, five passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown. His six total touchdowns are the most in a single game in team history by a QB.
Travis Etienne posts first multi-receiving-touchdown game
Jaguars RB Travis Etienne scored three receiving touchdowns against the Jets. It marked the first time Etienne had scored more than one receiving touchdown in a game in his career. Etienne entered the game with just three receiving touchdowns.
Etienne is the second running back in franchise history to have two receiving touchdowns in a game ( Maurice Jones-Drew , Week 14 of 2011).
Etienne finished the game with 12 carries for 32 yards and three catches for 73 yards and three scores.
Jaguars shut down Jets, RB Breece Hall
Jacksonville's offense wasn't the only unit to have a good day Sunday. The Jaguars' defense led the way early and often, shutting down New York's ground attack. Jets RB Breece Hall had just 15 yards on eight carries. The Jets totaled just 52 rushing yards in the first half against Jacksonville.
The Jets' offense was forced to punt just twice, but were forced off the field on fourth down twice. The Jags' defense also tallied three interceptions. With about three minutes remaining in the game, the Jets had mustered just 262 total net yards, including 121 yards on the ground and 141 yards through the air. The Jets averaged 4.7 yards per pass, while Jacksonville averaged 10.3.
Hall finished the game with 23 yards on 12 carries.
Jaguars reach double-digit wins for first time in nearly a decade
For the first time since the 2017 season, the Jaguars will have double-digit wins when the season concludes. Reaching their 10th win on Sunday against New York, Jaguars head coach Liam Coen is tied with former Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone for the best start to a head coach's career in team history.
Jaguars set to take on Denver Broncos in Week 16
The Jaguars will face off against the Denver Broncos on the road next week. The game will hold many playoff implications for both teams. For Jacksonville, the Jaguars can get a leg up in the AFC playoff standings as well as hold onto their spot as the best team in the AFC South.
