- Jaguars' Day 2 draft pick named 'instant impact' rookie by ESPN
The Jacksonville Jaguars held their rookie minicamp this weekend, and all eyes were on tight end Nate Boerkircher, who was the Jaguars ' first pick, albeit in the second round, in the 2026 NFL Draft. That pick was roundly criticized , with most analysts grading it harshly, as if he was already a draft bust before even playing a single snap.
Boerkircher seemingly impressed during minicamp, however, and the consensus on him may be slowly changing. He was just included in Field Yates' list of candidates for Day 2 or Day 3 picks that can make an instant impact.
"Eyebrows were raised when Boerkircher went off the board in Round 2, but the Jaguars expect him to play meaningful snaps early," wrote Yates. "He was regarded as one of the best blocking tight ends in the class but has been underutilized as a pass catcher, even though he has a skill set that outpaced his production. Multiple tight end sets are trendy in the NFL, and while Brenton Strange is set to be Jacksonville's lead tight end, Boerkircher will figure into the mix."
There was a lot of anticipation about Boerkircher heading into minicamp, particularly to see how he would perform as a pass catcher. Liam Coen made it clear that while he was looking primarily for a blocking tight end, he also believes Boerkircher has more to offer as a pass catcher than what was displayed during his college career. Boerkircher had a great separation rate but was rarely targeted, indicating that the lack of pass catching production was not an issue of his abilities.

Now that minicamp has concluded, it appears that Coen was correct; he had high praise for his rookie tight end, while analysts likewise said his performance was impressive . This further gives credence to Yates' prediction that Boerkircher will have an immediate impact in Jacksonville, despite being undervalued at every turn after the draft.
