The Jacksonville Jaguars will retain one of their own ahead of the NFL's free agency negotiation period, colloquially known as "legal tampering."
Jacksonville will re-sign cornerback Montaric "Buster" Brown ahead of free agency, a league source confirmed to the Times-Union . The deal was first reported by ESPN , for a reported three-year, $33 million contract. According to OverTheCap, the deal makes Brown the 26th-highest-paid corner in the NFL on a per-year basis.
The NFL's negotiation window opens Monday at 12 p.m., 52 hours ahead of the new league year. The new league year will take place on March, 11 at 4 p.m.
Brown, a seventh-round pick out of Arkansas in the 2022 NFL Draft, is one of the team's homegrown talents, earning more playing time as injuries piled up in the team's secondary. Brown became a full-time starter during the 2025 season after the team traded away corner Tyson Campbell .

Brown, 26, started 12 games last season after starting a career-high 10 games in 2024. In 2025, Brown totaled 51 tackles (43 solos), 12 pass breakups and two interceptions during the team's 13-4 season. Brown was one of the team's standouts as a tackler in the secondary and made multiple big plays to help the team win down the stretch and into the playoffs.
The Jaguars made several moves over recent days to get the team under the league's mandated salary cap. That included several players restructuring deals. The team also passed on placing either the franchise or transition tags on their impending free agents, allowing running back Travis Etienne and linebacker Devin Lloyd to hit the open market.
Brown now slots in opposite former second-overall pick, CB/WR Travis Hunter. Hunter will likely play a full-time role on defense with his role on offense expanding as time goes on.
In his career, Brown has started 29 games (52 total games played), accounting for 166 tackles (127 solos), six tackles for loss, 24 pass breakups and three interceptions since 2022.
