Jaguars re-sign CB Montaric Brown: Grading the deal
The Jacksonville Jaguars made the news official, announcing that they have re-signed cornerback Montaric Brown prior to free agency.
Let's grade the move.
Grading Jaguars ' re-signing of CB Montaric Brown
There are a few aspects to this deal that will go into the grading.
The first, and this was a big win for the Jaguars, was getting a deal done before free agency. All reports over the last few weeks suggested that Brown was going to have an active market. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler even named him one of his sleeper free agents coming out of the NFL combine after speaking with execs.
Had Brown hit free agency, there would have been competition, his price tag could have increased, and anything could have happened.
Second, retaining Brown solidifies the starting cornerback unit for the Jaguars. Brown showcased last season his ability to be a full-time starter who can make plays on the perimeter. Having Brown back in the fold now provides the Jaguars with flexibility going into the NFL draft. No longer is addressing cornerback a must right away.
Lastly, this deal was a good value. Brown will average $11 million per year on his next contract, which ranks 26th in the NFL this season among cornerbacks. Brown proved that he can more than hold his own as a starter, and paired some good ball production with that, and now he's being paid like a full-time starter.
