Coughlin was theJaguars' first head coach, hired ahead of the 1995 season, coaching through the 2002 season before being let go by former Jaguars owners Wayne and Delores Weaver.
The long-time NFL coach guided Jacksonville to four straight playoff appearances from 1996-99, including AFC Championship Game appearances in 1996 and 1999. Coughlin finished his coaching career in Jacksonville with a 68-60 regular-season record and went 4-4 in the postseason.

He coached Jacksonville to a 14-2 record in 1999, the best record the team has had in its history. He was inducted into the Pride of the Jaguars in 2024.
Coughlin later became head coach of the New York Giants (2004-2015), where he won two Super Bowls, both against the New England Patriots. Coughlin finished his Giants coaching career 170-150 in the regular season (12-7 in the postseason).
Coughlin returned to Jacksonville as the team's executive vice president of football operations from 2017-19, a tenure that included another AFC Championship Game appearance in 2017.
Just one of five coaches will advance to the final Hall of Fame ballot. The Coach Subcommittee will select that candidate on Nov. 17. The full Selection Committee will then vote on induction in early 2027.

To be inducted into the Hall, the coach must receive at least 80% approval. Last year, the Committee opted not to induct Belichick, a controversial move that likely led the Hall to trim its voting members and some of its procedures. Belichick received just 39 of 50 votes, needing just one to advance as a Hall of Famer.
It is widely expected that Billichick will be named to the Hall this year, likely sidelining Coughlin's opportunity for at least one more year. The last coach inducted was Don Coryell in 2023. Holmgren was the finalist for 2025 and also did not make it.
