Did you ever wonder what one one-hundredth of a second might mean? When he was coming out of college. Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jake Bobo was timed at 4.99 in the 40-yard dash.
Far be it from me to suggest that general manager John Schneider might be swayed by such trivial matters, but do you think there's a chance that the Seahawks would have passed on Bobo had he been just one one-hundredth of a second slower?
I mean, seriously. How many NFL teams are going to bring in a wide receiver who can't break five seconds in the forty? Byron Murphy II - all 306 pounds of him - goes 4.87.
But Schneider did sign Bobo as an undrafted free agent back in 2023, and he has become a fixture over the last three seasons. He has not made much of a mark as a receiver. 34 catches and three touchdowns in three seasons.
But he has been an inspirational player - a core member of Seattle's formidable special teams. That is where his absence is going to hurt the defending Super Bowl champions the most.
The Seahawks announced on Friday that Bobo was dealing with a serious knee injury. On Saturday, it was announced that Bobo was done for the season.
There was already a decent chance that Bobo's time at receiver could dwindle in 2026. With Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cooper Kupp returning, the starters are set. Rashid Shaheed figures to have a bigger role on offense this year, and the return of a healthy Tory Horton meant that Bobo was, at best, fifth in line for snaps.
Even that may have been in jeopardy depending on the progress of rookie Emmanuel Henderson and early camp standout Montorie Foster .
Still, it was hard to imagine a Seahawks roster without Bobo. That's how important he has been on special teams.
Bobo appeared in 34 straight games in his first two seasons, almost exclusively on special teams. His 314 snaps in 2024 were second only to Drake Thomas . Though injuries limited his totals last year, he was still a vital member of the unit.
So how will the Seahawks replace those snaps? There are a lot of potential scenarios.
Brady Russell , who moved into the starting fullback role after Robbie Ouzts was placed on IR last week, might see his offensive snaps drop. Seattle has a promising young fullback in Brock Lampe . They may not have another wild man on special teams comparable to Russell. His leadership on those units becomes even more important with Bobo out.
If cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett was on the roster bubble, that may not be true anymore. He has yet to make a major impression on defense, but he has become a very valuable special teamer. The same may be true for receiver Cody White , though his roster spot may not have been in any real doubt.
Players like Pritchett and White will be counted on to pick up the slack in Bobo's absence. Other core special team players like Russell and Mike Morris will also be counted on to an even greater degree. Special teams play may secure someone like George Holani a spot even when all the running backs supposedly ahead of him on the depth chart are back to full health.
And younger players who were longer shots may see another avenue open up. Both Emmanuel Henderson and Ricky White III were excellent special teams players in college. They are not likely to win a spot as a receiver, but as a special teams star, a chance remains.
One of the reasons Seattle won the Super Bowl last year is that they had among the best special teams in the league. They are strong at kicker and punter. Shaheed was invaluable as a returner. And the coverage teams were solid. All those elements - even the ones that seem largely dependent on one individual, like Jason Myers ' ability to kick a field goal - rely on an entire unit.
Bill Belichick always had the best special teams in the league. He had the best players - like 10-time Pro Bowler Matthew Slater and three-time Pro Bowler - and former Seahawks coach - Larry Izzo.
Jay Harbaugh, who took over as special teams coordinator from Izzo when Mike Macdonald came to town, learned under his uncle John Harbaugh, a former special teams coordinator himself who went on to win a Super Bowl as head coach.
Belichick and Harbaugh knew how vital special teams were. Macdonald knows it too. Seattle can replace a backup wide receiver. Replacing Jake Bobo will entail far more than that.
