Jalen Brunson has spent his career making small advantages count. The New York Knicks guard entered the NBA after winning two national titles at Villanova. He is now an NBA champion and Finals MVP , yet his path still looks like a long series of smaller jobs done well.
That mindset goes back to his childhood. Brunson lived in Charlottesville from 2007 to 2009 while his father, Rick, worked at the University of Virginia. He played against older competition there and kept his focus on improving rather than chasing a distant NBA dream.

Jalen Brunson Says 30 Focused Minutes Can Beat Two Hours
Brunson recently explained that his training was never about spending as much time as possible in the gym. He believes a short workout with a clear purpose can do more than a long session filled with wasted time and he said that approach shaped how he developed.

"People say, 'Oh, I was in the gym for two hours today.' Like, okay, what did you do in the gym?' You can get a much more difficult and better workout in 30 to 40 minutes versus just being in the gym BS'ing for two hours," Brunson shared these thoughts during an appearance on the Road Trippin' Show .

His point was not that longer workouts have no value. Time alone does not prove that useful work happened. Brunson said every part of his training needed a reason, which made consistency about more than simply showing up.
"While it was about consistency, it was about being precise. There was intent to everything you did. It was definitely commitment. I loved going out and working out. I loved going and playing pickup," Brunson added.

That approach started before the NBA was even part of his thinking. Brunson said he would play at a recreation center in Charlottesville against college players and older competition while his father worked at Virginia.

"I would go play at the rec center with college kids. We would play pickup, I'm playing against older people and I'm playing well. I'm not thinking, I'm going to the NBA. The NBA was never talked about. No. I'm just trying to get better. It was all about going to college," Brunson commented.

The hindsight is hard to miss. Brunson was drafted 33rd overall in 2018 before becoming one of New York's biggest stars. In June, he led the Knicks to their first championship since 1973 and won Finals MVP after scoring 45 points in Game 5.
"There were baby steps. Yes there were long term goals, but I'm focused on the short term goals. Baby steps, one step at a time. People just want to jump straight there, and they get disappointed because they didn't enjoy their journey. I enjoyed every step of my journey. Enjoy your steps," Brunson said.

For Brunson, the lesson was never about filling the clock. It was about making the work count.
