The Philadelphia Eagles appear headed for major changes after an ugly loss in Washington. Where does that leave quarterback Jalen Hurts for 2027?
The Philadelphia Eagles face a growing list of questions about the future of quarterback Jalen Hurts . With Hurts sidelined by a blood clot and the offense sputtering without him, the conversation around the franchise quarterback has shifted.
Still, I don't believe Hurts has played his last down in Philadelphia.
That was a major topic on the latest episode of 13 Personnel. I joined co-hosts Austin Stanley and Easton Freeze to break down the quarterback landscape around the league. Since I'm in the Philly area, the Hurts question came my way. My answer hasn't changed, even though the situation around the Eagles has.
If you watched the loss to the Washington Commanders, you know this team is not performing well. Washington entered that game with one win. The Eagles were a 6.5-point road underdog against a bad football team, and they still lost by 17 points after getting stomped in the second half.
Philadelphia is without some key players, including Hurts. Backup quarterback Tanner McKee is what he is. All that being said, a team with consistent Super Bowl aspirations is putrid right now.
The problems go beyond one game. Over the last few years, the Eagles have struggled to find an offensive coordinator who gets the most out of this offense.
Brian Johnson , Kevin Patullo , and now Sean Mannion have all held that job, and none of those hires has solved the bigger issue. Even during the Super Bowl run, I'm pretty sure Philadelphia ranked 32nd in passing. That raised questions about the true upside of this offense, and those questions haven't gone away.
At some point, the finger gets pointed at the head coach. More and more, it's pointed at Eagles coach Nick Sirianni . If I were a betting man today, I would say Sirianni might be out after the season. I'm starting to believe that more each week, although nothing official points in that direction yet.
Here's the thing about Hurts, though. I've said it in the past, and I still believe it. If there's a cockroach that survives in Philadelphia, it's Hurts.
Part of that comes down to his contract. General manager Howie Roseman loves his void years, which makes the deal tough to decipher for any team weighing a trade.
As we laid out on the show, a team trading for Hurts would get two years of contract control through 2028, when he turns 30. That's one more year of control than Lamar Jackson's deal offers. On the flip side, that same control makes the situation a little easier for the Eagles to navigate if they keep him.
The blood clot is the biggest unknown. During our discussion, Stanley and Freeze described the issue as a major medical red flag for any team thinking about bringing Hurts in. We don't know the long-term picture yet, or when he will be available again. That uncertainty leaves plenty of intrigue around his status.
One thing is very clear: change is coming to Philadelphia after the season. I expect the Eagles to make at least one major move, and probably more than that. A team with these expectations can't sit still after a performance like the one in Washington.
That doesn't mean the quarterback is the one who goes. If Hurts is healthy and gets back to full strength, I believe he will be the quarterback for the Eagles in 2027.
So, is this the last we've seen of Hurts in Philadelphia? Right now, I still don't think so.
