Jarome Iginla announces that he is facing the battle of his life
If there was ever a player in the NHL who embodied what it meant to be tough, to be a leader, and to show up every single night no matter what, it was Jarome Iginla. Over the course of more than 1,600 games in the league, the man took everything hockey could dish out and kept coming back for more. Broken bones, bruises, wars in the playoffs, you name it. That's what makes this latest news so difficult to process for hockey fans everywhere.
The 49-year-old Hockey Hall of Famer has revealed from his home in Lake Country, British Columbia, that he has been dealing with significant health challenges, ones that have nothing to do with the game he dominated for two decades.

A Battle Unlike Any He's Faced Before
Iginla shared that he has been struggling with neurological issues, which he believes may be connected to a reaction involving cobalt from a hip replacement surgery he had a few years ago. After a career that took a massive physical toll on his body, the hip replacement was supposed to help him move forward in life after hockey. Instead, it may have introduced a new and deeply concerning problem.
There is a known medical concern that cobalt-chromium components used in certain artificial hip implants can release metal ions into the bloodstream through wear or corrosion, potentially leading to serious complications. On top of that, Iginla has been dealing with elevated mercury levels in his system, and doctors are still working to determine whether the two issues are connected.
The effects have been real and visible. His energy levels, weight, and even his speech have been impacted by the complications and the medications he's been taking. A video of Jarome and his son Joe filmed before this summer's NHL Draft drew concern from fans who noticed how much slimmer Iginla appeared and how different his voice sounded compared to the booming presence they remembered.
Iginla has spent more than a year undergoing tests and consulting with medical professionals, trying to get to the bottom of what exactly is going on and how to treat it. He remains hopeful, saying things are slowly getting under control, but acknowledged he needs more time to figure it all out.

A Legacy That Runs Deep
For anyone who watched the Calgary Flames during Iginla's 16 seasons as the face of the franchise, the news is gut-wrenching. This was a player who still holds the club's all-time records in games played, goals, and points, having put up 525 goals and 1,095 points in 1,219 games before stops in Pittsburgh, Boston, Colorado, and Los Angeles.
His crowning moment in a Flames jersey came during that magical 2004 playoff run, when he willed a team nobody believed in all the way to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final against Tampa Bay. Calgary fell one game short, but Iginla's performance that spring became the stuff of legend. He was a two-time 50-goal scorer, a six-time All-Star, and a two-time Olympic gold medalist, including that unforgettable 2010 moment in Vancouver when he set up Sidney Crosby for the golden goal.
Since retiring in 2018, Iginla has kept a low profile, dedicating himself to coaching and supporting his kids in their own hockey journeys. Two of his children, Tij and Jade, have already turned pro, while his youngest son Joe was selected by the Flames this summer, adding yet another chapter to the family's bond with the organization. In 2023, Iginla returned to the Flames as a special advisor to general manager Craig Conroy.

Only Lanny McDonald can match the kind of reverence Flames fans hold for Iginla. His impact was never just about the stats. It was about carrying a franchise on his back, playing through pain without complaint, and representing Calgary with a rare combination of pride and humility.
Now the man who never backed down from anything on the ice is asking for patience and time as he works through the most important fight of his life. If anyone has the determination to come out the other side, it's Iggy. Hockey fans everywhere will be pulling for him and his family.
