- Jaylin Smith’s IR Move Adds Another Problem to a Texans Team Searching for Answers
The Houston Texans didn't need another problem coming out of Sunday's loss to the Dallas Cowboys. They already had enough to deal with after falling to 0-4.
Unfortunately, Houston's rough start to the 2026 season just got a little more complicated.

The Texans officially placed second-year cornerback Jaylin Smith on injured reserve Tuesday after he suffered a hamstring injury during Sunday's 34-30 loss to Dallas. Smith was injured while blocking on punt coverage. He appeared in all four games this season, primarily contributing on special teams, recording two tackles while playing seven defensive snaps and 76 special-teams snaps.
On the surface, losing a rotational cornerback and special-teams contributor might not sound like a season-changing development. But with these Texans, it's about timing.
Houston Can't Afford to Keep Losing Depth
The Texans are already trying to figure out how a team that entered the season with legitimate expectations has managed to start 0-4. Now they have another player headed to IR at a position where depth suddenly feels much more important.

Smith's injury reportedly occurred during the third quarter against Dallas. And that Dallas game showed exactly why Houston needs as many capable defensive backs as possible.
CeeDee Lamb absolutely shredded the Texans secondary, finishing with a career-high 17 receptions for 189 yards and the game-winning 12-yard touchdown with just 40 seconds remaining. Dak Prescott repeatedly found favorable matchups as Houston struggled with communication and coverage responsibilities.
That is what makes Smith's injury frustrating.
No, Smith wasn't Houston's No. 1 cornerback. He wasn't going to suddenly become the guy responsible for shutting down an opponent's best receiver.

But NFL seasons are rarely about just the starters. They're about depth. They're about special teams. And they're about having enough bodies available when injuries inevitably start piling up.
The Timing Makes This Injury Hurt More
If Houston were sitting at 3-1, maybe this news wouldn't feel nearly as significant.
But the Texans are 0-4 and that changes the optics on everything.
Houston blew another late opportunity against Dallas, allowing Prescott to lead an 11-play, 74-yard game-winning drive. Lamb finished that possession by catching the touchdown that gave Dallas a 34-30 lead. It was the second consecutive game in which the Texans surrendered the go-ahead points in the final minute.

At some point, these can't simply be described as unfortunate endings. They're becoming a pattern, with communication mistakes, coverage breakdowns, penalties , and the the failure to finish.
Now Houston has to work on correcting those problems while losing another piece of its secondary and special-teams unit. That's not exactly the combination you want when you're desperately trying to save your season.
Smith's Availability Is Becoming a Concern
There is another part of this situation that deserves attention: Smith's durability.
The 2025 third-round pick out of USC has now dealt with multiple injuries early in his NFL career. He spent time on injured reserve last season with a hamstring issue before suffering a torn meniscus later in the year. His latest hamstring injury sends him back to IR again.

For a young player still trying to establish himself, missing developmental time can be just as damaging as losing snaps on Sunday.
Smith needs repetitions. He needs opportunities to grow within DeMeco Ryans' defense. He needs special-teams snaps.
Most importantly, he needs to stay healthy long enough for Houston to determine exactly what kind of player he can become. The talent is there, but availability matters.
My Two Pennies
Jaylin Smith landing on injured reserve isn't the biggest reason Texans fans should be worried right now. The 0-4 record, late-game defensive collapses and inability to consistently finish games deserve much more attention.

But Smith's injury represents something bigger. Houston's margin for error is disappearing.
The Texans have reached the point where every injury matters, every missed assignment matters and every lost opportunity matters. When you're 0-4, there isn't enough room left in the season to keep saying, we'll fix it next week.
Houston now heads into a Week 5 matchup with the Tennessee Titans needing more than another respectable performance. The Texans need a win.
And whether it's a starter, rotational corner or special-teams contributor, Houston needs everybody who is available to start playing like the season depends on it.
Because at 0-4, it pretty much does.
