The health of wide receiver Jayshon Platt has been the biggest talking point for Illinois football this season, and it looks like that conversation may finally be coming to a close.
Platt, a fifth-year senior, transferred from Florida Atlantic prior to the start of the season. He was poised to be a key member of Illinois' receiving corps before sustaining a soft-tissue injury in the offseason.
It has been a rough start to Platt's Illinois tenure, but according to Bielema in a recent media scrum, he would be very shocked if Platt didn't return after the bye week.
The speculation surrounding Platt's return took a turn for the better last week when he was listed as probable prior to Saturday's game against Michigan State. According to the Illini Inquirer's Jeremy Werner, Platt was listed as a game-time decision and warmed up with the kick returners prior to kickoff.
Platt unfortunately did not suit up in East Lansing, missing his sixth straight game for the Illini. He will look to get back on the field after the bye week against an Oregon Ducks defense that ranks No. 92 in the country in passing yards allowed per game (226.0).
If Platt suits up on October 24 against Oregon, he will have freshman Michael Clayton II under center. Clayton is taking over for Katin Houser, who suffered a broken hand on Saturday when making a tackle during an interception return.
Platt will add great depth and experience to a receiving corps that's being dominated by Collin Dixon, who has recorded 47 receptions, 608 yards, and nine touchdowns. He will become another reliable receiver for Clayton as he works his way through Illinois' gauntlet of a schedule.
According to multiple reports, fans should expect Platt to be a major piece of Illinois' offense upon his return, but I can't see him receiving a ton of snaps right out of the gate. He will likely operate on a pitch count and in specific packages before ramping up to a full workload.
It's hard to predict a debut like Platt's, especially with the lack of information surrounding his injury. Until proven otherwise, expect him to be eased back into action against Oregon, with the occasional deep shot if needed.
