Texas Tech football won't enter the 2026 season searching for defensive stars. The Red Raiders already have proven names across the field.
John Curry could still become the most important one.

The versatile linebacker is ESPN's X factor for No. 11 Texas Tech, which is coming off a 12-2 season and an 8-1 record in Big 12 play.
After spending last year surrounded by decorated veterans, Curry now has an opportunity to emerge as the next headliner of a defense loaded with preseason all-conference talent.
Calling him a traditional linebacker doesn't fully describe what he brings to the field.
Curry can operate inside the box, cover from the nickel position and line up at Texas Tech's hybrid "star" spot.
That flexibility gives the Red Raiders a potential answer for nearly every challenge presented by modern Big 12 offenses.

Need another defender near the line of scrimmage against the run? Curry can handle it.
Need someone athletic enough to track a slot receiver or disrupt a quick passing game? He can do that, too.
The Lubbock native already has a full season of starting experience, but his production was understandably overshadowed in 2025.
Jacob Rodriguez swept the Bednarik, Butkus, Lombardi and Nagurski awards, while Ben Roberts added another established presence to one of the nation's most intimidating linebacker groups.
Curry still earned honorable mention All-Big 12 recognition and offered a preview of what could be coming during the conference championship game.

Against BYU, he recorded 10 tackles and forced a fumble from running back LJ Martin , the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year.
It was exactly the kind of performance that can transform a talented starter into a nationally recognized difference-maker.
Texas Tech's defense won't need Curry to single-handedly carry the unit. That's what makes his breakout potential so dangerous.
Opposing offenses will already have to account for accomplished players throughout the Red Raiders' lineup.
Any attention directed elsewhere could give Curry the freedom to blitz, attack running lanes or use his athleticism in coverage.

His emergence would also prove Texas Tech's defense can reload instead of simply trying to replace last season's award-winning production.
The Red Raiders have already shown they can win 12 games and compete for the Big 12 championship. Their next step is turning that success into another title chase and a deeper national run.

Curry might not enter 2026 as Texas Tech's most recognizable defender.
By the end of the season, he could be the one everybody is talking about.
