The Kansas City Royals were officially knocked out of the playoff picture on Tuesday afternoon, and one night later they showed how much damage they can still do to everyone else.
Kansas City beat the Houston Astros 5-2 at Daikin Park on Wednesday night, and the loss shoved Houston into a tie atop the American League West with Texas , which beat Boston the same evening.

The Astros still hold the tiebreaker, but they have dropped seven of their last 10 games and the division race is now a dead heat.
How the Royals Won It
Left-hander Daniel Lynch IV set the tone with five scoreless innings, allowing two hits with one walk and three strikeouts on just 72 pitches.
Shortstop Jeremy Peña opened the Houston first with a double, and Lynch answered by striking out designated hitter Yordan Alvarez before working out of the inning.
Outfielder John Rave gave him the lead in the fourth with a two-run homer off Houston starter Cristian Javier , and second baseman Michael Massey finished a three-hit night with a solo shot leading off the eighth.

Later that inning, third baseman Josh Rojas and left fielder Isaac Collins both came around on catcher Carter Jensen 's double to right, and the cushion made Houston's two late runs meaningless.
Lynch Keeps Making His Case
Wednesday was Lynch's eighth start since injuries pushed him into the rotation, and his third straight outing of five innings.
He has spent most of the season as a reliever, where he posted a 1.96 ERA across 46 innings , and his overall ERA now sits at 3.29.
Manager Matt Quatraro considered sending him back out for a sixth inning, but Lynch was feeling a little under the weather, so the bullpen covered the last four innings instead.

The rotation audition is quietly becoming one of the most important stories of Kansas City's September, because a starter who can hold this form would change the way the front office builds its winter list.
Every strong outing makes the offseason decision harder, and that is the best problem a team in this position can have.
The bullpen looks deeper lately as well, with arms working their way back into form at the right time to close the year.
Spoilers
Rave made it easy when he said that the Royals do not plan on rolling over just because Cleveland 's win on Tuesday ended their mathematical hopes.

"We might not be in the race, but we're going to try to knock some people out on the way," Rave said.
The schedule gives them every chance, starting with Thursday's rubber match in Houston behind right-hander Seth Lugo before a weekend series in Pittsburgh .
There is also real value in these games beyond the chaos.
Jensen keeps giving the Royals reasons for optimism behind the plate, Massey is coming off one of his best nights of the year at the plate, and shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. stole his 42nd base while adding to a season the league has already recognized .
Kansas City cannot reach October, but it can decide who does, and that is a role this group clearly intends to enjoy.
