The Big House momentum can turn in an instant, and senior defensive tackle Jonah Lea'ea proved that on Saturday afternoon. Michigan took care of business with a 52-17 victory over UTEP, but the path to that convincing final score required a spark after a sloppy, penalty filled start. That spark arrived late in the third quarter courtesy of a huge defensive highlight from the Utah transfer.
With Michigan holding a 38-14 lead late in the third frame, UTEP quarterback EJ Colson dropped back, attempting to set up a screen pass to get the Miners moving. Lea'ea read the play perfectly from his interior spot on the defensive line. The 6-5, 290 pound lineman sniffed out the design, got his hands into the passing lane, and picked off the pass.

Lea'ea did not just settle for the takeaway. Securing the ball, he rumbled into the end zone for a pick six touchdown, capping off a lightning fast scoring stretch for the Wolverines. In a matter of 78 seconds, Michigan went from holding a comfortable lead to completely blowing the game open at 45-14, standardizing control before heading into the final quarter.
The explosive play capped off a complete defensive effort from Lea'ea, who continues to establish his presence in the middle of Michigan's front. After transferring in from Utah during the offseason, Lea'ea was brought to Ann Arbor to provide proven experience, anchor the run defense, and push the pocket. His instincts on the screen pass showcased the veteran poise Michigan coaches hoped to see when he joined the program.
While Michigan struggled with early turnovers and sloppy execution during parts of the first half, the defense stepped up when needed to stifle any potential UTEP threat. The third quarter turned into an absolute barrage for the Maize and Blue, highlighted by Bryce Underwood connecting with Andrew Marsh for a touchdown just moments before Lea'ea delivered his defensive score.
For Lea'ea, the pick six marks a signature moment early in his Wolverine career. Beyond the stat sheet, defensive linemen rarely get the chance to celebrate in the end zone with the ball in their hands, making the sequence one of the loudest crowd reactions of the afternoon inside Michigan Stadium.

As Michigan improves to 3-0 on the young season, defensive depth and opportunistic plays will remain crucial with Big Ten play looming next week against Iowa. If Jonah Lea'ea can keep making game changing plays up front, Michigan's defense will be well positioned for the tough conference battles ahead.
