The Minnesota Vikings created significant salary cap flexibility after trading linebacker Jonathan Greenard to the Philadelphia Eagles during Day 2 of the 2026 NFL Draft on Friday night.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the move carries major financial impact for Minnesota.
"The trade saves the Vikings $34 million in cap space."
The deal marks a notable shift for the Vikings, who part ways with one of their top defensive contributors while gaining flexibility to reshape the roster. In return, Minnesota received two third-round picks — including one in 2026 and another in 2027 — along with a 2026 seventh-round pick. Philadelphia also received a 2026 seventh-round selection in the exchange.
Shortly after the trade, Greenard agreed to a four-year, $100 million contract extension with $50 million guaranteed, according to Jordan Schultz of NFL Network. The extension underscores the Eagles' long-term commitment, while Minnesota avoids the financial burden tied to that type of deal.

Vikings reinvest in defensive line, shift focus to Day 3 after Jonathan Greenard trade
The cap savings provide the Vikings with added flexibility moving forward, whether through free agency, extensions for existing players, or continued roster construction. The timing of the move during the draft also allowed Minnesota to immediately reinvest in the defensive front.
With the No. 82 overall pick, the Vikings selected Iowa State defensive tackle Domonique Orange , adding a new piece to their defensive line following Greenard's departure. The selection signals an effort to maintain depth up front while adjusting to the loss of a proven pass rusher.
Minnesota now turns its attention to Day 3 of the draft, scheduled for Saturday at 12 p.m. ET in Pittsburgh . The Vikings hold four remaining picks, including two in the fifth round at No. 159 and No. 163 overall, along with two seventh-round selections at No. 234 and No. 235.

As the franchise navigates both financial and roster changes, the Greenard trade represents a pivotal move balancing immediate cap relief with future assets.
