Tuesday night in the MLB saw the first fight of the 2026 season breakout between Los Angeles Angels power hitter Jorge Soler and Atlanta Braves right-handed starter Reynaldo Lopez .
Both players were ejected immediately for their actions as the dugouts and bullpens cleared to help settle the chaos.
Jeff Passan tweeted out an update that both players have been suspended for seven games, but are appealing the decision.
" Los Angeles Angels DH Jorge Soler and Atlanta pitcher Reynaldo López have been suspended seven games for the big brawl in Anaheim last night in which Soler charged the mound and López punched him while holding a baseball in his hand.. Both are appealing."
Soler, a former World Series MVP for the Braves, was clearly not happy with how Lopez was throwing toward him. Lopez was not a member of the Braves when they won the WS, so Soler and Lopez are not former teammates.
ESPN's Stephen A Smith chimed in on Wednesday morning, giving his thoughts on the brawl.
"I loved it. Obviously, you don't want anyone to get hurt, but those were some haymakers Soler was throwing, and obviously Lopez, I see him with the check left … I really don't have a problem with it," said Smith, per First Take on X.
It's rare you see fights in Major League Baseball, compared to the old days when pitchers really did throw with intent. That part of the game is gone, but some players have rivalries.
