It wasn't easy, but the Buffalo Sabres ' first playoff game in 15 years was a success, with the Atlantic Division champions mounting a late third period comeback to beat the Boston Bruins in Game 1 of their first-round series.
And Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is here for it .
"The City of Buffalo is a better place when the Sabres are playing well," Allen said in his media availability on Monday, while rocking a Sabres hoodie and hat.
The Sabres have played well all season, going from another under .500 finish in 2024-25 to the top of the division in the span of a year. They were just four points back of the Carolina Hurricanes , who won the Eastern Conference.
And although the first postseason contest in a decade and a half in Western New York was mostly painful, it ended in jubilation. Trailing 2-0 with under 10 minutes left, Tage Thompson scored twice to knot the score before defenseman Mattias Samuelsson gave Buffalo the lead with under four to play.
When the dust settled, the Sabres retained home-ice advantage with a 4-3 triumph, and will look to take a 2-0 series lead on Tuesday night at the KeyBank Center.
"We've been in games that have prepared us for this," Thompson, who scored 40 goals in the regular-season, said afterwards, per NHL.com's Heather Engel. "I think years of adversity is enough experience to get you ready for something like this. I think any time you go so many years not making the playoffs and then it's finally here, the last thing you want is regret.
"There's just a heightened feeling of hunger. You just don't want to let this opportunity slip. I thought tonight was really important to make a statement and set our standard. I think we still have another level to get to. We're just going to keep trying every game to find another level."
It was a shocking conclusion by all accounts; the Sabres heard boos from the home crowd early in the third period, before scoring three goals in a span of just 4:34 to completely change the atmosphere in the building.
It's just one game, but it was a hugely encouraging conclusion. Buffalo and Boston will again do battle on Tuesday night, and although Josh Allen missed Game 1 while on a plane, you can bet he'll be tuned in for Game 2.
