Liverpool's three-week pause in competitive action has left Andoni Iraola with an unusual problem: more time to coach, but far fewer senior players available to work with.
With 18 first-team players initially away on international duty, the Liverpool head coach has been continuing his work with a reduced group. The calendar offers breathing space, yet the opportunity to refine his ideas with the whole squad remains limited.
For those still on Merseyside, however, the break has created an opening. Young players can train alongside the available seniors, while Iraola prepares for a demanding run of fixtures once club football resumes.

According to Gregg Evans' report for The Athletic , Liverpool have largely retained their usual training schedule, allowing a few additional days off rather than making wholesale changes.
Iraola has been working with the senior players who remained at the club, supported by members of the under-21 and under-18 squads.
That approach offers continuity during a period when normal preparation is impossible. A coach still establishing his methods can reinforce expectations with the players available, even if broader tactical work must wait until the internationals return.
The limitation is obvious. Liverpool cannot fully rehearse combinations or collective movements involving players scattered across different national-team camps.
Still, the sessions need not be wasted. The smaller group gives the coaching staff an opportunity to examine individual habits and help younger players understand the demands of first-team training.
Jayden Danns and James McConnell are among those identified by The Athletic as having an opportunity to catch Iraola's attention during the break.
For young players, these periods can be valuable precisely because the familiar hierarchy changes. Fewer senior internationals are present, creating more room to participate and demonstrate an understanding of what the coach wants.
Liverpool's intention, according to the report, is for their development teams to adopt a style similar to the first team's.
That alignment matters. A youngster moving into senior training should encounter recognisable principles, even when the speed, precision and physical demands increase.
It does not guarantee promotion or immediate playing time. It should, however, help the club judge which players are ready to contribute when opportunities arise.
With a congested schedule approaching, those assessments could become particularly useful.
The most uncomfortable part of the international window is beyond Iraola's control.
The Athletic reports that Alexander Isak returned from Sweden duty as a precaution after a minor injury, while Cody Gakpo was awaiting scan results following an ankle problem sustained with the Netherlands.
Neither update, on its own, establishes how much club football either player might miss. Both illustrate why an extended break can bring anxiety as well as useful training time.
Liverpool's next phase will be considerably less spacious. The Athletic reports that the first team face 10 matches in 27 days after the break.
That makes squad readiness an immediate priority. Iraola will need to assess returning internationals, establish who is available and decide how to distribute responsibility across a busy period.
It also gives the current work with younger players a practical purpose. Familiarity gained now could help if they are needed later, whether in training, on the bench or during matches.
The success of Liverpool's international break will therefore be judged after it ends.
Iraola cannot recreate a full squad on the training pitch. What he can do is prepare the players within reach, strengthen their understanding of his football and ensure that the next opportunity does not arrive before they are ready.
