There is no way to sugarcoat it that Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cristopher Sanchez is on a roll. Though his pursuit of Orel Herschiser's scoreless inning streak was stopped at 50.1 on Wednesday, he remains dominant .
The one on the literal receiving end of his excellence is catcher J.T. Realmuto , who described what it was like to catch his signature changeup, per 97.5 The Fanatic. After the Phillies defeated the San Diego Padres 3-2, Realmuto described Sanchez's changeup as a "cheat code".
"It feels like a cheat code when you're catching that you can always go back to that pitch," Realmuto said.
Sanchez's changeup has been known to result in numerous ground balls and missing bats. Along the way, he has become the unexpected top prospect for the Philadelphia pitching rotation.
Sanchez pitched seven innings and came away with eight strikeouts. Meanwhile, Realmuto went 1-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. He broke a 1-1 tie with a home run in the bottom of the 7th inning.
Sanchez is now 7-2 with a 1.46 ERA and 103 strikeouts. Realmuto is batting .223 with 29 hits, 3 home runs, and 10 RBIs as the Phillies are now 32-29.
Also, Realmuto was the man behind the plate bearing witness to Sanchez's chase of history. They have forged into one of the most dynamic battery combinations in all of MLB. Realmuto, a 12-year MLB veteran, has become a stabilizing and potent force for the young left-hander, who is in his 5th season.
The Phillies will close out their series against the Padres on Thursday at noon CST/1 pm EST.
