The New York Mets are mired in a disaster of a season, sitting in last place in the National League East standings. After Juan Soto blasted a grand slam on Sunday, Mets fans are starting to feel some joy once again.
Soto had a little strut going as he got ready to round the bases, following his blast on Sunday. New York fans loved to see it.
New York is playing the Miami Marlins on Sunday. The Mets are currently 25-33 on the season, heading into that game.
Soto has battled injury this season . When he wasn't in the lineup, New York's offense really struggled. That is one of the reasons why the team is last in the division, and more than likely out of the playoff race.
New York has also struggled with their pitching. The team is using relievers left and right in recent weeks, trying to find the right combination of arms to last in games. The Mets used an average of 5.6 pitchers per night during a stretch in mid-May, per MLB.com.
"Is that sustainable? Of course not," Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said recently after a win. "But at this level, man, whatever it takes day in and day out. We worry about tomorrow, tomorrow. And I'm glad that the boys came through today."
It wasn't supposed to be like this for the Mets this year. New York brought in a lot of talent before the 2026 season, with the goal of making the World Series. The team is also trying to avenge a disastrous end to the 2025 campaign, that saw New York miss the postseason.
New York entered Sunday's game having lost six of their last 10 contests.
