With the World Cup in Boston over the summer, Julian Edelman made sure to come back home and get in on the party.
Specifically, the legendary Patriots wide receiver had fun with the Scottish fans who took over the city and recalled spending a day with them alongside Rob Gronkowski. Marching through the city in kilts while drinking beer, and even putting a cone on top of the George Washington Statue in the Public Garden, is certainly a time he won't forget.
Plus, he got to party it up while drinking his own beer!
"I don't know how these people got the beer. I rolled up to the Boston Garden, and there's a bunch of Scots drinking Edel-Brau," he told Patriots Wire in an exclusive interview. "I was like, 'What? What is going on?' It was so fun. The World Cup energy in Boston was a really fun experience. Seeing the pridefulness of all the different countries, and especially with the Scots, the Tartan Army, they were crazy and they were fun. There was no malice. It was all fun and putting cones on statues. I thought I was going to die putting the cone on the George Washington statue."
The Patriots legend joked that he used to live near the statue and always dreamed of climbing it, so with the Scots, he lived his dream. And as he did it, he got to look out at a sea of Scotland fans, many of which were drinking his Sam Adams lager.
"I was shocked, and they kind of knew Gronk and they knew who we all were," he added. "It was such a fun experience, like I said, and it brings up the energy of what we all missed, and that's the NFL season."
And now, his beer is on tap, with Sam Adams hosting a watch party with Edelman at their tap room in Boston for the season opener last Wednesday.
"It's an exciting time, and especially seeing your mug (face) on a tap... especially with the brand that it's on, Sam Adams, which is so Boston. It's been a really cool experience to get to see that," he explained. Just coming from my rookie year, trying to make the team as a seventh-round quarterback who transferred to receiver, to now a partnership with 'Our City, Our Beer' with Sam Adams, having my own Edel-Brau, it's just really cool. I'm not a wordsmith, but it's just like a cool feeling."
Edelman explained that while he was playing, he never really put much thought into the legacy he was creating in New England. But now he's able to look back on it all and do so with his own beer.
"I never really got to think about that, but to reflect now that I'm retired and see that, you realize how special being a part of the Patriots teams that I was on was," he explained. "And being a part of Samuel Adams, Our City, Our Beer campaign, like that's special stuff. That's stuff that I'll be able to, hopefully when I'm like 70 or 80 in an old person home, having my daughter come visit me; hopefully she'll be bringing me one of my beers."
The number of beers in a pack can vary, whether it be six, 12, or even more. But during the conversation, Edelman jokingly brought up the idea of an 11-pack, representing the number he proudly wore for so many seasons.
A Sam Adams lager with Edelman's face on it... name something more Boston than that!
