Over the last few weeks, the Texas Longhorns' wide receiver room has undergone numerous changes. They added one of the best options in the portal, Cam Coleman, and said goodbye to Jamie Ffrench, Parker Livingstone and DeAndre Moore Jr ., who transferred to other schools. With their offense largely set, one player who will be losing to make a name for themselves in 2026 is Kaliq Lockett.
After arriving on campus with high expectations, the former five-star recruit had a quiet freshman season. He only appeared in five games, hauling in five passes for 47 yards. He also found the end zone once, during the Longhorns ' bowl game win over Michigan. While Lockett did not meet expectations, he did show flashes of being a useful piece in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl.
Even though, Lockett finished his first season in Austin strong, he will again have to battle for snaps. The Longhorns' top three receivers this fall will be Coleman, Ryan Wingo, and Emmet Mosely V. That trio has had various degrees of success and will make life difficult for defensive coordinators. The goal for Lockett will be to prove he can be a reliable fourth option.
For Lockett, that is a real possibility as he now has one year under his belt. He will also be able to build on his chemistry with Arch Manning , which improved towards the end of the 2025 campaign. It was an encouraging sign for Texas that Lockett chose to stay for his sophmore season rather than enter the portal for a program that could guarantee more playing time.
If Lockett can meet the expectations, the Longhorns offense could have another star to rely on. He arrived on campus ranked as the second-best wide receiver in his class by 247Sports . With a quarterback like Manning under center, all Lockett needs is more opportunities.
Although Lockett won't open the 2026 campaign as the Longhorns' top option, he has the potential to be a very dangerous weapon in the passing game.
