The Kansas basketball program has gone through a lot of eventful offseasons under head coach Bill Self, but none more chaotic than what we've witnessed in 2026. In a matter of one month, the Jayhawks have completely retooled their roster with the regular season approaching, thanks to a trio of players who were recently granted eligibility through court rulings.
Given the lack of success KU has enjoyed in March Madness since winning a national title in 2022, the Jayhawks feel due for a deep run this season. However, the roster Self has constructed doesn't exactly fall under the "ethical" guidelines that many fans use when discussing the current state of college basketball.
Their most recent addition was Trey Kaufman-Renn
, a transfer from Purdue who was selected in the second round of the NBA Draft this summer. He's 24 years old and spent five years in West Lafayette before being granted a temporary injunction that allowed him to play another season of college basketball.
As a result, that has been met with plenty of criticism from other fanbases because of the unusual circumstances surrounding the situation.
After a few down years, KU is starting to get back to having everyone call them cheaters and whatnot, much like the accusations surrounding the program during the 2017 scandal. During Big 12 Media Day
, Self was asked whether he was trying to be a "disruptor" by adding Kaufman-Renn and potentially wreaking havoc on college basketball, and he provided about as blunt of a response as you could have expected.
"Nobody controls when the court dates are, so are the people who did it in July a disruptor?" Self asked. "Well, there's 22 players in our league that are in the same situation. So, a disruptor? If we don't play with them, we're going to play against them. All I want to do within the guidelines of whatever has been set, how do we get our best team together?"
Self's perspective is interesting here and hard to argue if you root for another team. If the Jayhawks are hell-bent on going all in to compete for Self's third national championship at the university, they can't necessarily worry about the "ethics" of every move when they're trying to win it all.
As Self noted, he's doing exactly what falls within the current guidelines of the NCAA and Big 12 Conference. The reason Kaufman-Renn is still eligible despite the Big 12's new rule regarding professional players is that he didn't declare for the draft and never signed a professional contract, which Commissioner Brett Yormark says separates him from policy's restrictions.

Even before the days of NIL, Self had received his fair share of scrutiny when it came to recruiting. In 2017, the program was initially charged with five Level I violations stemming from the federal investigation into corruption in college basketball, including allegations involving improper benefits connected to Billy Preston and Silvio De Sousa.
This time, Self isn't doing anything outside the restrictions currently in place - yet people still aren't happy with how he's going about things.
Sure, Kansas is taking advantage of a set of rules that plenty of people may not like, but that doesn't necessarily mean the Jayhawks are breaking them. Other schools in the conference are doing the same thing but won't receive the same backlash because they aren't blue bloods like KU.
Ultimately, the Jayhawks' three late-offseason additions of Tre White, Melvin Council Jr., and Kaufman-Renn may not even be eligible by the end of the season if their respective court rulings are reversed. Either way, Self has done everything he can to put the Jayhawks in a position to compete for a national title in what could be his final season at the helm. Considering where this program has been the last few years, Jayhawk fans should be pretty happy with how aggressively he's approached this roster .
