The Kansas Jayhawks opened their 2026-27 season with a convincing 95-65 victory over Fordham on Monday night, and one of the biggest storylines was the collegiate debut of freshman forward Tyran Stokes.
The highly touted recruit entered his first regular-season game in a Kansas uniform with plenty of expectations. After an impressive preseason exhibition stretch, Stokes gave Jayhawk fans another reason to be excited about what he could bring to Bill Self's team this season.
Stokes finished with 15 points, seven rebounds, one assist and one block in 25 minutes of action. He shot an efficient 5-of-7 from the field and connected on one of his three attempts from beyond the arc. He also went 4-of-7 from the free-throw line.
His ability to attack the basket and use his strength around the rim stood out throughout the night. At 6-foot-7, Stokes brings a combination of size, athleticism and offensive versatility that can create matchup problems for opposing defenses.
One of his memorable first-half moments came when he connected with Leroy Blyden Jr. on an alley-oop dunk. The play showcased his ability to finish above the rim and gave the Allen Fieldhouse crowd an early glimpse of the athleticism that made him one of the most highly regarded players in his recruiting class.
According to the official Kansas box score , Stokes was one of three Jayhawks to finish with at least 15 points. Tre White led all scorers with 22, while Blyden Jr. also contributed 15.
Stokes continued making an impact after halftime. Kansas eventually pulled away with a 19-3 run over a five-minute stretch, turning a competitive matchup into a comfortable victory. The freshman's scoring and rebounding helped Kansas maintain its advantage as the Jayhawks took control.
The Associated Press game recap highlighted Stokes' 15-point performance as part of Kansas' season-opening win.
While there will be plenty for the freshman to improve as the season continues, his first official appearance showed why there is so much excitement surrounding his potential. His efficiency from the floor, ability to get to the basket and willingness to contribute on the boards were encouraging signs.
Kansas will need Stokes to continue developing as it prepares for a challenging schedule. The Jayhawks return to Allen Fieldhouse Friday night to face Middle Tennessee.
