Kansas State guard David Castillo plans to enter NCAA transfer portal
Kansas State guard David Castillo plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal, On3 has learned. Castillo averaged 10.3 points per game for the Wildcats this past season.
Castillo’s entry into the portal isn’t entirely surprising given the firing of former head coach Jerome Tang before the end of the season. He committed to Tang’s regime ahead of the 2024-25 season. However, Tang has since been replaced with Casey Alexander, the previous coach at Belmont .
For Castillo, he came to Kansas State as a four-star recruit according to the Rivals Industry Rankings, which is a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services. Castillo was the No. 61 overall player in the 2024 recruiting class and the No. 10 point guard. He was also rated the No. 1 player from the state of Kansas, too.
He was the only freshman on Kansas State’s roster last season, and appeared in 32 of the Wildcats’ 33 games. However, he was highly regarded coming into his career. After all, he scored nearly 1,700 career points in his prep career while averaging 22.4 points per game.
Additionally, Castillo is also a two-time gold medalist for Team USA. This includes titles at the 2021 FIBA U16 Americas Championship in Xalapa, Mexico and the 2022 FIBA U17 World Cup in Malaga. During those events he teamed up with the likes of Ron Holland , Rob Dillingham , Cooper Flagg , Asa Newell and DJ Wagner .
Now, he’ll look for a fresh start in the NCAA transfer portal entering his junior season. He’ll have two years of eligibility to play for his next program.
For K-State, they’ll enter the Casey Alexander era this offseason. The Wildcats are expected to be active when the NCAA transfer portal opens on April 7 — the day after the national championship game.
