Kansas State lands Oklahoma State star edge rusher Wendell Gregory in portal

MANHATTAN — Most Kansas State football fans will wake up Tuesday morning to learn that the Wildcats landed a productive player out of the transfer portal at the position of their greatest need.

Oklahoma State edge rusher Wendell Gregory committed to Kansas State late Monday night, he shared on his Instagram. He's coming off his redshirt freshman season in which he was named the Big 12's Defensive Freshman of the Year.

Gregory, listed at 6-foot-3, 255 pounds, will join Kansas State with three seasons of eligibility. He started his career at South Carolina , where he redshirted, before making 27 total tackles, with 12 for a loss and four sacks, in his lone season in Stillwater.

Gregory is the most significant addition to the Wildcats' defense, which lost pass rushers Tobi Osunanmi and Chiddi Obiazor to Indiana via the transfer portal. Additional edge rushers might be needed, but Gregory represents a heck of a get.

247Sports ranked Gregory as the 11th-best edge rusher in the portal, and the fourth-best available as of Monday night. On3 ranked him as the No. 24 overall player and fourth-best edge.

Pro Football Focus had him down for 32 total pressures in 2025, with 21 quarterback hurries, seven QB hits and four sacks. Obiazor led the Wildcats in hurries last season with 19.

Out of high school, Gregory was a four-star prospect and the No. 186 player in his class. The Marietta, Georgia, native was offered by Kansas State, with former running backs coach Brian Anderson as his primary recruiter. He picked South Carolina over Arkansas , Auburn, Georgia Tech , Kansas and Boston College .

During his lone season in South Carolina, he played in two games and made just one tackle. It was there when he transitioned from a high school linebacker to a collegiate edge rusher.

While in the transfer portal, Gregory was pursued by Texas , Wisconsin , Miami ( Florida ), Missouri and others.

Gregory immediately becomes a plug-and-play edge rusher for the Wildcats, who also added Coastal Carolina transfer edge rusher Jayden Bryant during this transfer cycle. K-State also added defensive tackles De'Arieun Hicks ( Gardner-Webb ), Austin Ramsey ( Kentucky ) and Kamari Burns ( Cincinnati ) to its defensive line.
