The Kansas State Wildcats are expected to get back one of their top offensive weapons for this week's game on the road against the Colorado Buffaloes.
All signs are pointing toward tight end Garrett Oakley returning to the lineup after missing the past two games because of an undisclosed illness. He is back at the ideal time, especially with the Wildcats coming off a 28-17 loss to the Arizona State Sun Devils.
His presence is even more important this week because of the quarterback issues the Wildcats are having. Starter Avery Johnson could miss his second straight game because of injury. And backup Jacob Knuth is also dealing with an ankle injury.
Oakley is arguably the Wildcats' top receiving threat. He is also one of the top NFL prospects. During the preseason, he was the player who most scouts were in Manhattan to take a glance at. Oakley has been a big reason why Linkon Cure has received limited opportunities. Cure is the first five-star recruit in the history of the program. But Oakley has been that impressive to keep him on the sidelines the past two years. Still, the Wildcats coaching staff views Cure as the future of the program.
WHAT'S THE LATEST ON AVERY JOHNSON?
According to Wildcats coach Collin Klein, Johnson is listed as day to day for this weekend's game on the road against the Colorado Buffaloes. The Wildcats are hoping to learn more on Johnson's status Wednesday afternoon.
Last week Johnson missed the Kansas State loss to the Sun Devils. His replacement, Jacob Knuth, played exceptional in the 28-17 defeat. He completed 26 of 41 passes for 194 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for another score.
WILDCATS MEN'S HOOPS TAKES ANOTHER LOSS IN EXHIBTION
Fans of the Wildcats basketball team are going to have to be patient during the first season of the Casey Alexander era as coach.
It's going to take some time before Alexander places his stamp on the program. The Wildcats lost 88-84 to the Nebraska Cornhuskers in an exhibition matchup Monday in Lincoln.
Guard Brandon Rechsteiner led the way for the Wildcats with 21 points on 8 of 14 shooting. Jaden Schutt added 16 points while Jaylen Alexander had 11.
This is definitely a rebuilding year for the Wildcats. Alexander took over for Jerome Tang, who was fired at the end of last season. Kansas State has a completely full roster except for Andrej Kostic, who is the lone returner.
