- How Keeanu Benton and Yahya Black transformed the Steelers' front
The Pittsburgh Steelers ' interior defensive line is undergoing a powerful evolution, driven not by big-name free-agent splashes, but by the rapid maturation of young talent up front. With Keeanu Benton anchoring the middle and Yahya Black taking a massive leap, Pittsburgh's defensive front continues to dominate even while navigating key injuries.
On the " Locked on Steelers " podcast, host Christopher Carter and analyst Alan Saunders detailed how Benton and Black have solidified the run defense. Saunders pointed to Black's dramatic physical and technical development as a catalyst.

"You're seeing Yahya Black just take a serious leap this year from a guy who would occasionally look really tough and have a really good hustle play last year, to this year where it's like, man, he looks like he's figuring it out," Saunders observed. "Not getting pushed back in the run game at all, which is something I think we saw a surprising amount of last year for just how big he is."
Alongside Black's transformation, Benton's steady growth has transformed the interior unit into a nightmare for opposing ground attacks. Saunders highlighted Benton's improved processing against double teams, calling it a major milestone.
"I also think like Benton is playing very well against double teams this year," Saunders noted. "I mean that has been like sort of the thing that has really held him back in the run defense and I think he's just figured some things out."

Supported by veteran Cameron Heyward's mentorship and effective coaching from the defensive staff, the duo's relentless play ensures the line maintains high standards regardless of depth attrition. As Benton and Black continue to win at the point of attack, Pittsburgh's defensive front has established a physical foundation that can control games and set the tone for the entire unit.
