LUBBOCK -- No. 13 Texas Tech is off to a 2-0 start and only three weeks into the season stare down arguably its biggest hurdle of the entire year.
The Red Raiders are set to welcome No. 22 Houston to Galaxy Stadium this week for a marquee matchup in the Big 12 under the Friday night lights in Lubbock.

As of now, the Cougars are the lone top 25 matchup on the schedule for Texas Tech and have been touted all offseason as one of the prime contenders to knock off the Red Raiders at the top of the league.
While some other program could surge late in the year, it still feels highly likely that if Texas Tech can pass the early test posed by the Cougars, it should land in the driver's seat to at least make it back to Arlington.
Adding on to the already high stakes is the fact that the Red Raiders have quite frankly not lived up to the preseason expectations and arguably even the rank of No. 13 through their first two contests.

In its debut with Abilene Christian, the offense sputtered and was stagnant after rattling off two straight touchdowns but still got the job done in an eventual 33-10 victory.
With a much closer final score than most would have anticipated out of a borderline top 10 squad against an FCS opponent, questions swirled about if this was simply rust in the debut or if there were serious issues underneath.
Head coach Joey McGuire and offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich were adamant that it was the former and that there would noticeable changes in week two.
Out in Corvallis, the offense did come alive with 35 points hung on Oregon State and cashed in every time in the red zone, with no settling for field goals.

Ahead of the Friday showdown with Houston, Texas Tech receiver Kenny Johnson offered more reassurance that their offensive output these past two weeks are barely scratching the surface of what it is truly capable of.
"I think we've done a great job with that in these last two games. Really just keeping our playbook really simple and doing what we need to do," said Johnson.
"I don't think we've showed even half of our playbook," he revealed.
This is a huge development for a team raising many concerns following its first two showings and could go a long way in explaining why Texas Tech looks so off from what was expected.

Even if the playbook gets opened up more against the Cougars, which will undoubtedly be the case, it will be up to Texas Tech to make the most of these never-before-seen schemes in what should be a battle down to the end.
Texas Tech will aim to bring out the heavy firepower when it welcomes Houston to Galaxy Stadium on Friday at 7 p.m. CT on FOX.
