- Kent, Conwell, Key post big games in NBA Summer League
The summertime version of the NBA has a distinct Sycamore influence this year.
Four former Indiana State University players are suiting up for NBA Summer League teams, trying to take a step toward earning a position on the clubs' upcoming regular-season rosters.
The Summer League gives rookies, second-year players and players from the developmental NBA G-League to compete on a high-profile stage. That platform is the NBA Summer League action in Las Vegas, where games began last Thursday and continue through this coming Sunday.
The former Sycamores involved include smooth-shooting guard Ryan Conwell (from the 2023-24 ISU team), a second-round NBA Draft pick with the Miami Heat ; versatile frontcourt man Robbie Avila (2022-24) a free agent signee with the Los Angeles Lakers ; soaring forward Jayson Kent (2022-24), who debuted with the Portland Trail Blazers in March after a G-League season; and small-forward Tyreke Key (2017-21) with the Toronto Raptors , following his season with the Raptors 905 G-League team.
Conwell opened the Heat's Las Vegas games with a team-high 19 points on Friday, leading Miami to a 119-86 win over Milwaukee 's Summer League squad. Conwell shot 2-for-7 from 3-point range and added three assists and a rebound.
On Sunday, Kent led Portland with team-high totals of 20 points and eight rebounds in the Trail Blazers' 112-105 loss to Orlando in Vegas. In three Summer League games going into Tuesday's slate, Kent is averaging 11.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.3 steals for Portland.
On Monday, Key delivered a team-leading 16 points, along with three assists and two rebounds to pace the Raptors in a 94-93 victory over the Indiana Pacers ' Summer League team in Las Vegas.
Key scored 19 points on Saturday as the Raptors beat the Houston Rockets 102-89. In that one, Key hit all four of his free throws in 18 minutes off the bench, as well as 4 of 6 field goals, including a trio of 3-pointers.
In three Summer League games, Key is averaging 13.7 points, 2 rebounds and 1.3 assists.
Avila hasn't yet played for the Lakers in Las Vegas. But in the NBA Summer circuit's California Classic earlier this month, Avila had two points, two assists and one rebound in 14 minutes of action.
