Kentucky women's basketball is entering the 2026–27 season with growing expectations, a talented roster, and a legitimate opportunity to compete with the nation's best programs. Under head coach Kenny Brooks, the Wildcats are building toward something bigger, and the latest preseason rankings suggest that the program is moving in the right direction.

The No. 14 ranking gives Kentucky a strong starting point heading into the new season. It also places additional pressure on the Wildcats to prove they belong among the nation's top programs. Kentucky has earned a preseason ranking in either the AP or coaches poll in 13 of the past 17 seasons.
Under Brooks, the Wildcats have been ranked in both polls every week since he arrived in Lexington in spring 2024. The Wildcats reached as high as No. Six in the AP poll and No. Seven in the coaches poll last season after earning major victories against highly ranked opponents. Kentucky ultimately advanced to the Sweet Sixteen before its tournament run ended against the Texas Longhorns.
The preseason ranking is an encouraging sign, but it is only the beginning. Kentucky must demonstrate that it can handle the week-to-week demands of the SEC and consistently win games against ranked opponents.

Any serious discussion of Kentucky women's basketball begins with Clara Strack.
The six-foot-five senior center enters the season as one of the most important players in the SEC. Last season, Strack averaged 16.9 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 2.53 blocks per game while leading Kentucky in scoring, rebounding, blocks, and steals. She also recorded 16 double-doubles and made 25 three-pointers, demonstrating that her offensive game extends beyond the paint.
Strack's impact goes beyond her scoring totals. She gives Kentucky a reliable interior presence, protects the rim, and creates matchup problems for opposing defenses. Her ability to finish around the basket while stretching the floor makes her particularly valuable in a conference filled with talented frontcourts.
If Kentucky wants to compete for an SEC championship or advance beyond the Sweet Sixteen, Strack will need to remain a consistent force on both ends of the floor. She also gives the Wildcats a potential national award candidate. A strong senior campaign could put her in the conversation for major individual honors while helping Kentucky make a deeper postseason run.
Me'Arah O'Neal is another player who could have a significant impact on Kentucky's season. The former Florida Gators forward averaged 13.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game last season. Her ability to contribute scoring and rebounding gives Brooks another experienced option in the frontcourt.
O'Neal was named to the preseason All-SEC second team by the league's coaches. Her addition is particularly important because opponents will have to account for more than Strack when preparing to defend Kentucky. If O'Neal can establish herself as a consistent scoring threat, the Wildcats could become more difficult to defend.
Teams that focus too heavily on limiting Strack may leave opportunities for O'Neal to attack mismatches, finish inside and contribute on the glass.
Kentucky's frontcourt talent is a major strength, but perimeter shooting will also play a critical role in determining the team's ceiling. Asia Boone returns as one of the Wildcats' most important outside shooting threats. She was the SEC's second-best three-point shooter from a season ago, giving Kentucky a proven option who can punish defenses for collapsing into the paint.
That skill set is especially valuable alongside Strack. When defenses send extra attention toward the center, Boone's ability to knock down perimeter shots can create more room for Kentucky's interior offense. The Wildcats need consistent spacing, smart shot selection and improved offensive flow against teams that can defend multiple positions.
Boone's shooting could be a major part of that equation.
The Wildcats also added a highly regarded freshman class, ranked sixth nationally in the program's preseason announcement. Maddyn Greenway, Savvy Swords and Emily McDonald headline the group.
Greenway arrives with significant national recognition after being named the 2026 MaxPreps Female National Athlete of the Year. Swords is another highly rated prospect, while McDonald brings a reputation as a perimeter shooting threat. After winning the three-point competition at the 2026 McDonald's All-American Game.
Freshmen often need time to adjust to the speed and physicality of college basketball. However, their development could become increasingly important as the season progresses. If one or more of these players earns meaningful minutes, Kentucky could have a deeper rotation and more flexibility against different opponents.
Brooks has strengthened the roster with a transfer class ranked sixth nationally, according to the program's preseason roster announcement. The group includes several players who could help Kentucky immediately.
Diana Collins: The former Alabama guard averaged 8.4 points and 2.4 assists per game last season, while helping the Crimson Tide reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Her experience could help Kentucky improve its backcourt decision-making.
Ayanna Patterson: The former UConn forward was a highly regarded recruit and McDonald's All-American. Kentucky will look to unlock her potential and add another athletic option to its frontcourt rotation.
Jemma Amoore: The guard arrives from IU-Indianapolis and provides another option in the backcourt as Kentucky builds its rotation.
The value of the transfer class will depend on how quickly these players adjust to Brooks' system and their new teammates. Talent is important, but chemistry, communication and defined roles are equally critical.
The newcomers settle in quickly, Kentucky should have more options when dealing with injuries, foul trouble and the demanding SEC schedule.
Kentucky women's basketball enters the 2026–27 season with a No. 14 national ranking. A fifth-place SEC preseason projection and a roster built around one of the country's most productive returning centers.
Strack gives the Wildcats an established star. Boone supplies perimeter shooting, O'Neal adds another scoring option, and the transfer and freshman classes provide depth and upside. There are still questions to answer, particularly regarding offensive chemistry and how quickly the new players adapt.
The SEC will not make the path easy, and preseason rankings do not guarantee postseason success. For Big Blue Nation, the expectation should be to see continued growth, competitive performances against elite opponents and a team that is playing its best basketball when March arrives.
Kentucky women's basketball has earned its place in the preseason Top 15. Now the Wildcats have to prove they belong there.
