Over the past decade, as he watched the NBA evolve from retirement, Kevin Garnett has not had a shortage of opinions on LeBron James . And his views have often been inconsistent, frequently oscillating between praise and criticism.
However, with James now an unrestricted free agent after deciding not to return to the Los Angeles Lakers , Garnett couldn't be any more certain about where the aging superstar should land and possibly end his legendary career.
Echoing the sentiment of his Boston Celtics teammate Paul Pierce , Garnett argued that James should reunite with the Cleveland Cavaliers . For Pierce, it makes sense from a storybook perspective . KG, however, believes the franchise could maximize whatever the four-time MVP has left in his tank at his old age.
"I actually think him going to Cleveland is the most obvious because he has a lot of leverage there," Garnett explained on KG Certified. "I mean, Cleveland can use what he has."
The perfect mentor for Mitchell
Since he was traded by the Utah Jazz in 2022, Donovan Mitchell has been the clear face of the Cavaliers franchise. That label was even more solidified after he inked a four-year, $273 million contract extension with the team this July.
Should James choose the Cavaliers, he would not disrupt the established hierarchy. In fact, according to Garnett, his arrival would benefit Mitchell more than anyone else.
Garnett witnessed a similar dynamic in 2010 when James joined forces with Dwyane Wade on the Miami Heat . He argued that the winning influence of Wade, who won a title and Finals MVP in 2006, helped LeBron reach the next level. The 2001 MVP now sees James having that same impact on Mitchell.
"Bron was a nice guy. When he got down there with D-Wade, Dwyane…gave him that, 'F—k, you,'" he explained. "And that's how I'm gonna see Bron do Donovan, if that can ever be."
The Big Ticket believes that James had the opportunity to elevate Kyrie Irving in a similar way when he returned to Cleveland in 2014. However, for Garnett, the star guard was established in his own identity, unlike Mitchell, whom he views could be more receptive to learning from the King.
"I think Kyrie had his own power and his own light and his own aura," KG said. "I think Donovan is a little more receptive and a little more open to absorbing greatness and trying to get to another level because he got it."
LeBron's experience could unlock another level for Cleveland
With Mitchell at the helm, the Cavaliers ended their four-year playoff drought, which began after the 2018 NBA Finals loss. They have been solid contenders in the Eastern Conference since then, reaching the conference finals in the past season.
Although their rotation is now considered more experienced and battle-tested, the Cavaliers, especially their younger players, could still benefit from James's veteran guidance.
With four championships and four Finals MVPs under his belt and 10 Finals appearances, the forward is not only the oldest player at 41, but he is arguably the most experienced active player. In Garnett's view, the Cavaliers need that championship mentorship and knowledge.
"He has a different confidence in the playoffs. He has a different leadership. He's the king in that city," KG said. "I think he can inspire those pieces around there. I think he can get everybody in there to play on another level."
Garnett also argued in June that he should join Cleveland for his son, Bronny . But at the end of the day, the decision rests in James' hands. Whatever factors ultimately shape his choice, Garnett believes a return to Cleveland gives him the best chance to make one final meaningful run.
