One of the most iconic eras of the NBA emerged during the 1980s and at the center of much of that greatness stood the Boston Celtics .
Not only were they among the most successful franchises of that era, winning three championships and making the Finals four times in a row, but even off the court, their superstars Larry Bird and Kevin McHale lived their lives to the fullest, despite some hiccups on the way.
In fact, McHale once gave just one example of those hiccups. He recalled a wildly unbelievable story with Chandler Parsons about a night when he and Bird got into a physical altercation with a different group, only to travel the next day on a commercial flight with one of those individuals involved.
McHale and Bird got into a bar fight
While the Celtics were regarded as one of the most disciplined and complete teams on the court, they weren't a group that could be bossed around. And they carried this trait even off the court. Known for their larger-than-life personalities, when the Celtics stars wanted to enjoy their hearts out off the court, they preferred a drama-free night out.
However, when McHale once joined Bird for a gala time in a bar, things went downhill in an instant.
As Parsons recalled on an episode of the "Run It Back" show, McHale once detailed a night when he and Bird got into a heated bar fight with a group of strangers. Unfortunately for the Celtic duo, one of those men involved in the scuffle happened to be on the same commercial flight as them when they were traveling to another city for a game. The coincidence left both McHale and Bird in splits, wondering about the odds.
"McHale drafted me in Houston; he told me the craziest stories about him and Larry Bird. First of all, he thought the league was so soft, he couldn't stand the NBA by the time he was there. He told me, him and Larry Bird - they'd play a game, win and go to a bar. They got into a bar fight with strangers and the next day they go into their flight, it's a commercial flight. The guy they got into a fight with was on the plane (going with them) to the next city, " Parsons recalled. " How different the times were? It was crazy. I didn't believe it; it was nuts."
The Celtics were an unhinged group
Whether it was enjoying beers during their downtime or experiencing the nightlife across various cities, the Celtics stars of the 1980s embraced the spotlight and lived boldly.
And if anyone disrupted their good time, they never hesitated to stand up for one another - something perfectly illustrated by Bird and McHale charging into that bar fight together.
Safe to say that perhaps that unity is precisely why the Celtics of that era were one of the closest-knit groups the league had ever seen.
Their bond translated directly to the court, where their teamwork, success and championship success spoke volumes about how every player stood behind the other, be it altercations of the court or away from it, nobody left the other teammate stranded.
