- Key Takeaways From The Notre Dame Defense vs The Rice Owls
(Michael Caterina, USA TODAY Sports)
It's been four years since Notre Dame has shut out an opponent. Yesterday afternoon, in their home opener, the Irish hosted the Rice Owls and won in dominant fashion 52-0. The offense put up a lot of points but it was the defense that stole the show and set the tone for the level of dominance they put on display as a team. Rice ran a very unique style of offense and this defense played aggressive and came prepared. Defensive coordinator Chris Ash should be very pleased with how his unit played in yesterday's season opener. Here's my main takeaways from Notre Dame's dominant defensive performance.
DEFENSIVE LINE DOMINATES
Last week, the Owls rushed the ball 70 times for 465 yards and four touchdowns. Yesterday afternoon, they rushed the ball 34 times for 64 yards, averaged 1.9 yards per carry and zero touchdowns. Notre Dame doesn't shut down an offense like that without a dominant performance from the defensive line. As a unit, they absolutely shut down the Owl's ground attack but junior Bryce Young had the best performance of his career.

The 6-6, 260-pound defensive tackle was poised for a breakout this season and he's certainly living up to that hype through the first two games. Young finished the afternoon with 2.5 tackles for a loss and the lone sack on the Notre Dame defense. He was stout against the run, set the edge, helped the linebackers create plays by funneling run plays back to the middle of the field and was a disruptive player. If this is a preview of things to come, Young is going to be a dominant player.
AGGRESSION REMAINS
We're getting farther and farther removed from the passive defense we saw in the early stages of 2025. Ash has done a tremendous job through two games this season playing with an exceptionally aggressive philosophy and scheme. In back to back games, the Irish have yet to allow a team to rush for over 70 yards and after seeing their play on the field, that doesn't come as a surprise.
Rice didn't cross the 50-yard line until their final offensive drive of the game, and that drive ended in a fumble by quarterback Jaccuri Brownwhich was recovered by freshman Rodney Dunham. Offensively, they only averaged 2.8 yards per play and the Irish recovered four fumbles and returned one for a touchdown on the second play of the game. This is proving to be a top-level defense in college football. There's still some improvements that have to be made, but this defense is showing out early in 2026.

DEPTH ON DISPLAY
Similar to the offensive side of the ball, we got to see the full strength in numbers of this Notre Dame defense. Throughout the entire game, 24 players recorded at least one tackle and the one player who didn't, Boubacar Traore , returned a fumble for a touchdown on the second play of the game.
This is an exceptionally deep unit, which isn't something that we learned in their matchup with Rice, it was confirmed based on what we saw over the course of the offseason. Despite missing defensive tackle Jason Onyeand stud safety Brauntae Johnson, the Notre Dame defense absolutely dominated the Rice offense and it was a host of players that did so.
