Kieran Trippier has verbally agreed to sign for Wolverhampton Wanderers as the club begin rebuilding for the Championship.
The former England international will sign for Wolves on a free transfer and is scheduled to undergo a medical when he returns from a short holiday.
Trippier departed Newcastle at the end of the season and his capture is a statement of intent for Wolves and their head coach, Rob Edwards. He will sign an initial two-year contract with the option of a further year.
Wolves are intent on reshaping their squad this summer after a bitterly disappointing campaign which ended with them finishing bottom of the Premier League.
Edwards is prioritising British talent and targeting several new signings.
Rennes midfielder Jordan James, who impressed on loan at Leicester City this season, is admired by Wolves and their recruitment team but there is significant competition including from clubs in the top division.
Coventry striker Ellis Simms is also well liked by Wolves but there are doubts over whether he will be available following the club's promotion to the Premier League.
Edwards received a boost last week with Brazilian midfielder André committing his future to the club despite relegation.
João Gomes is expected to depart, however, with Atlético Madrid finalising a deal worth just under £40m.
Skubala on his way to Bristol
Bristol City are close to appointing Michael Skubala as their new head coach.
Skubala is poised to leave Lincoln City after compensation was agreed with the Championship club.

A move for Bournemouth coach Tommy Elphick broke down this week, but Skubala was always high on the list of candidates for new sporting director James Ellis.
Skubala will leave Lincoln after guiding the club to promotion out of League One.
