The San Francisco Giants need to improve more than the top of their roster. Their most important offseason needs also include pitchers capable of covering unexpected innings, dependable infield coverage and a bench that provides useful alternatives.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa is a free agent who could give San Francisco defensive coverage throughout the infield.

How Kiner-Falefa fits with Giants
Kiner-Falefa hit .242/.322/.311 with two home runs, 16 RBIs, eight stolen bases and a .633 OPS in 66 games with the Boston Red Sox during the 2026 season.
His offensive production would place him in a supporting role, but his eight Outs Above Average demonstrate the value he can provide defensively.
Kiner-Falefa played second base, shortstop and third base. That versatility fits a Giants infield whose plan at second base depends partly on Marcelo Mayer 's readiness and Casey Schmitt 's recovery.
San Francisco should consider budgeting between $4 million and $6 million for a one-year contract.

Kiner-Falefa could make starts whenever necessary and participate in an open competition at second base without requiring the Giants to commit to one long-term solution before knowing whether Mayer is prepared.
His limited power should keep San Francisco focused on paying for his defense and flexibility rather than expecting him to become a significant offensive contributor.
Kiner-Falefa would give manager Tony Vitello the freedom to adjust his defensive alignment without making a corresponding roster move.
If an infielder is injured, requires rest or struggles for an extended period, Kiner-Falefa could step into the lineup without being asked to learn an unfamiliar position.

That preparation matters for a team trying to build a more dependable bench. San Francisco needs reserves who can do more than pinch-hit occasionally or cover one position.
Kiner-Falefa's upside
A player capable of moving around the infield allows the Giants to carry different combinations of pitchers and position players throughout the season.
Kiner-Falefa's defensive work would also support the pitching staff. Reliable positioning, quick reactions and the ability to complete difficult plays can help prevent innings from continuing and reduce the number of additional pitches thrown.
His approach would fit a role that requires patience and adaptability.

Kiner-Falefa would not arrive with a guaranteed everyday job, but he could earn regular opportunities by handling each defensive assignment and providing steady work wherever Vitello needs him.
A short contract would protect the Giants from making a lengthy commitment while Mayer and Schmitt determine the future of second base. It would also give Kiner-Falefa an opportunity to secure playing time through his ability to cover several positions.
San Francisco still needs greater offensive production elsewhere. Kiner-Falefa would not solve every problem, but his defense and positional flexibility could prevent smaller roster issues from becoming larger ones.
