Jacob Melanson didn't need much time to make an impression in Seattle.
The 23-year-old winger appeared in just 36 games for the Kraken last season, but he quickly became one of the team's most physical forwards. Melanson racked up 188 hits, bringing an edge and energy to the lineup that Seattle clearly wants to keep around.

Now, the Kraken are betting on more of it.
Seattle announced Friday that it has signed Melanson to a three-year, $4.35 million contract extension, keeping the former fifth-round pick under contract through the 2028-29 season. The deal carries an annual average value of $1.45 million.
Melanson scored twice and finished with five points in his first 36 NHL games last season. He also spent time with the AHL's Coachella Valley Firebirds, where he produced nine goals and 19 points in 28 games.
The production may still have room to grow, but Seattle already knows what Melanson can provide when the puck isn't on his stick.

"He brought a lot of physicality and energy to our group last season," general manager Jason Botterill told NHL.com. "We're looking forward to seeing more from him these next few years."
That opportunity is now secured.
Melanson was coming off his three-year entry-level contract and was a restricted free agent before agreeing to the extension. The Halifax native was originally selected by Seattle in the fifth round, 131st overall, of the 2021 NHL Draft.
For Melanson, the new contract is about more than simply securing his NHL future. He and his fiancé, Belle Ashley, have quickly made Seattle home.

"I'm feeling awesome," Melanson said. "My fiancé [Belle Ashley] and I are over the moon to have the deal done and be back in Seattle for another three years. She loves it here. I love it. It's an amazing fan base."
