Kyle Farmer spent most of 2026 on the Atlanta Braves roster, yet he barely touched the field. The veteran infielder arrived in early February hoping to help his hometown club, but his time in the big leagues was short and quiet. He played only 14 games all season, a number that shocked fans who expected him to be a key backup. His path from signing to release tells a story of missed chances and a roster that simply did not need him.
The Braves brought him in as a free agent in early February 2026, only to cut him and re-sign him a month later in March. Per Battery Power , he was meant to be an end-of-bench option who could fill in at shortstop or catch in an emergency. Instead, he sat on the bench for weeks, saw limited action, and landed on the injured list by mid-May. When he returned on July 4, he got just one plate appearance before the team released him on July 21. He signed a minor league deal later and came back in September, but his season was already over.

A Roster Spot That Went Unused
Farmer made the Opening Day roster, but that spot meant little when he could not get into games. He played ten games over six weeks and got only 15 plate appearances. His return in July lasted two games with one at-bat before he was let go. Even his late-season call-up in September brought just two games and three more plate appearances. In total, he slashed .222/.211/.278 with a 25 wRC+, numbers that show he could not hit at all. He finished with -0.1 fWAR, marking his second straight season below replacement level.
On April 30, acting as the designated hitter at home versus the Detroit Tigers, he made his single start. He went 1-for-3 in that game, which was his best moment of the year. That single in the second inning helped score the first run, giving him a win probability added of 0.03. Per Battery Power, it has been two years since Farmer actually provided any value to a team. It was a tiny spark in a very dark season for a player who has played 97 or more games every year since 2019, except for 2020.
Why The Experiment Failed
The Braves hoped Farmer would be a safety net if Ha-Seong Kim got hurt, but the plan fell apart. He spent 2025 with the Colorado Rockies and had a terrible year with a -1.0 fWAR in 300 plate appearances. That bad season hurt his reputation before he even put on a Braves uniform. The team needed someone who could hit or play great defense, and Farmer did neither in his tiny sample. He played third base, second base, and shortstop but did nothing to stand out in any of those spots.

At 36 years old, Farmer is past his prime, and the stats prove it. His career has been built on playing a lot of games, but he could not do that in 2026. The team gave him a chance to return to Atlanta, but they did not give him a real role to fill. He was supposed to be a utility guy, but he ended up being a bench warmer who got released in July. The numbers show he was not ready to help the team when they needed him most.
What The Numbers Say For 2027
Farmer's time with the Braves is done, and his future looks shaky. He has never been a star, but he used to be a reliable backup who could play anywhere. Now, he has two straight bad years and a 2026 season where he played only 14 games. The Braves will need to find a new utility player who can actually hit or play defense if they want to improve their bench depth.
As the team looks ahead to 2027, they must focus on finding players who can contribute right away.
