The first of the FIFA World Cup semifinals has played out in stunning fashion, with Spain delivering a stellar 2-0 win over the mighty France . Kylian Mbappe and co. had played in both of the previous two World Cup finals, but were beaten by a Spanish side in that Dallas that got about their business in astounding fashion.
The result meant that Didier Deschamps' team was handed their worst loss at a World Cup since back in 2010, when they lost to Mexico 2-0, per a posted on X by ClutchPoints. France were the majority's favorites to qualify for their third straight finals.
However, they never got going and came up against a highly efficient team that scored twice with their only two shots on target. Lucas Digne had eyes only on the ball in the 21st minute, giving away a penalty after Lamine Yamal clattered into him.
Mikel Oyarzabal
stepped up to calmly slot it past Mike Maignan
. France only threatened to get back into the game and had little to show for their efforts in the first half.
Deschamps brought on Manu Kone in place of Adrien Rabiot
at halftime, but the change had little effect as Spain
hardly looked threatened and continued to keep the ball for large stretches. Yamal gave Digne a torrid time down the right wing throughout and even had a goal disallowed in the second half.
Dani Olmo produced a remarkable flick to send Pedro Porro through, and the Tottenham Hotspur man calmly converted for his second goal of the tournament, and of his entire international career. France made their changes in the second period, with the likes of Desire Doue, Rayan Cherki and Theo Hernandez being brought on with little to show for it.
However, the 2022 finalists simply had an off night, with Michael Olise also struggling for large periods of the game. The likes of Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele all were starved of service, although the latter had a couple of opportunities to make something, even producing a late shot that was straight at Unai Simon.
Spain will now play the winners of the semifinal between England and Argentina , and will have a huge chip on their shoulders considering the way they outplayed the bookies' favorites for the tournament.
