Luka Doncic has a new hobby, and he made sure to give credit where it's due. The Lakers star discussed his budding love for the sport and revealed exactly how he got hooked. Doncic said he only started playing back in March, crediting teammates LeBron James and Austin Reaves for pulling him into the game .
"I just went to Top Golf once, and then I just started playing," the 6-time NBA All-Star told Golf Channel's Rich Lerner at The Open Championship. "For me, it's very relaxing, and that's where I started. Obviously, Austin and LeBron were playing, so that helped me."
The introduction traces back to a team-bonding golf outing organized by head coach JJ Redick during a Lakers road trip in March, which also included Bronny James and Luke Kennard. What began as a casual break from basketball has since turned into a genuine passion for Doncic.
Doncic did not hold back when comparing the difficulty of golf to his day job. "This is a game where you don't have any teammates to bail you out," the 2-time NBA Scoring Champion said. "Golf is way more difficult. I mean, for me, it is."
He also touched on what draws so many elite athletes to the sport, pointing to the mental challenge and the escape it provides.
"It's very addicting. Now I want to play it every day," Doncic said. "There's a lot of times I do 36 holes, so it's eight hours. Patience, I think, and mental stuff, you know, every shot matters. I think mentally being patient is the key."
Doncic also revealed his home course of choice back in Slovenia is Lake Bled, rather than any of the well-known Los Angeles courses frequented by his Lakers teammates.
Beyond golf, Doncic touched on the upcoming season, expressing excitement for a fresh start after the Lakers' playoff run ended earlier than hoped. The 27-year-old missed that postseason run entirely due to a hamstring strain, but said he is fully recovered and looking forward to what a healthier roster can accomplish in 2026-27.
