Is Lamine Yamal vs. Jude Bellingham soccer's new must-watch rivalry?
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo , step aside.
A new soccer rivalry is here and heated.
Lamine Yamal and Jude Bellingham are the latest soccer stars to have an ongoing feud.
On Monday, May 11, a day after Yamal's FC Barcelona beat Bellingham's Real Madrid in El Clásico to clinch the La Liga championship, the Spanish superstar posted an Instagram story with a photo of himself cheering from the sidelines of the match and the caption, "talk is cheap" with a series of crying emojis.
The caption seems to be mocking the English midfielder's post from when Real Madrid won the rivalry match over Barcelona back in October.
"Talk is cheap. HALA MADRID SIEMPRE!!!" Bellingham wrote with a white heart under an Instagram gallery of photos from the match.
Yamal also reiterated the statement during Barça's championship parade while giving a quick comment to Jijantes FC.
"Talk is very cheap," he said in Spanish with a laugh.
A recent World Cup ad from adidas featured both Yamal and Bellingham and showed the tension between the two. In the spot, the Three Lions midfielder is sitting in the back of a car driven by Timothée Chalamet. The actor is frantically trying to put together a squad to take on a local team when Yamal opens the door and gets into the car while saying, "Vámonos." Bellingham responds in annoyance with a sigh.
"My dream team," Chalamet remarks. "Everybody know each other?"
Yamal and Bellingham respond by coldly looking out opposite windows of the car.
At 18 years of age, Yamal has broken several records. Two years ago, when he was 16, he became the youngest player to debut for Barcelona, the youngest player to start a La Liga match, the youngest player to score a goal in a La Liga match, the youngest player to start in the Champions League and the youngest player to debut and score for Spain's national team.
Bellingham, 22, has made his own mark on history. He was the third-youngest player to play for England's national team when he made his debut in 2020 at the age of 17. In 2021, before his birthday, he became the youngest player to play in the Euro championship. In November, he earned the title of youngest player to participate in 50 Champions League matches at the age of 22 between his time with Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid.
The two players faced each other in the final match of the Euro 2024 tournament where Yamal was the youngest player to appear in the championship game, both notching an assist in Spain's 2-1 win.
Yamal and Bellingham could face each other in the knockout stages of this summer's World Cup, which will be the Spaniard's debut at the tournament.
The duel between Messi and Ronaldo has been ongoing for nearly two decades and had a similar start as the beef between Yamal and Bellingham, in the La Liga rivalry. Messi established himself as a great via his tenure on Barcelona while Ronaldo claimed the crown as Real Madrid's all-time leading scorer. The two traded off receiving the Ballon d'Or, given annually to the best player in soccer. Ronaldo was the first to earn the honor in 2008, but Messi has since surpassed him with eight trophies compared to CR7's five. Messi also was the first to win a World Cup when he did so at the 2022 tournament.
The two created a historic moment when they posed playing chess together for a Louis Vuitton ad ahead of the 2022 World Cup. Ronaldo's Instagram post of the photo has more than 41 million likes, making it one of the most-liked post on the social media platform.
While the Yamal and Bellingham feud has years to catch up on the storied rivalry of that between Messi and Ronaldo, this is a good start.
