Lane Kiffin already has enough on his plate trying to build LSU into a championship contender. Now, his daughter's apparent breakup with one of his own players has become another unexpected storyline surrounding the Tigers.
Landry Kiffin appeared to confirm her split from LSU linebacker Whit Weeks in a TikTok posted Oct. 27. The video showed her younger brother, Knox, consoling her after a breakup.
Her caption joked about calling on her brother for a humbling experience. The post quickly drew attention from college football fans who had followed her relationship with Weeks.
Neither Landry nor Weeks has publicly explained the split in detail. But the post gave fans a new reason to discuss one of LSU's most unusual off-field connections.
Weeks is not just another name on LSU's roster. He is a senior linebacker and team captain who has earned All-SEC recognition.
He also happens to have been dating the head coach's daughter.
That connection was already unusual when Kiffin took over at LSU. Weeks previously explained that the relationship did not affect how Kiffin treated him inside the football program.
Now, the apparent breakup has created another layer of attention around a situation that was already guaranteed to attract curiosity.
There is no evidence that the relationship has affected Weeks' standing with the coaching staff. Any suggestion that personal drama will determine his football future would be speculation.
Still, the internet was always going to notice this one.
Weeks has been sidelined since suffering a leg fracture against Texas A&M in September. His recovery and eventual return remain much more important to LSU's defense than his relationship status.
Meanwhile, Kiffin has to keep the Tigers focused on the season rather than the latest social media conversation.
The situation is awkward enough without anyone turning it into something it is not. Landry is entitled to a private life, and Weeks deserves to be evaluated on his football performance.
But when your head coach's daughter dates one of your team's biggest defensive stars, even a breakup can become college football news.
Welcome to the Lane Kiffin era in Baton Rouge.
