Larry Bird has always admired Michael Jordan for his undeniable greatness. However, Larry Legend never let himself be so enamored by MJ to the point where he would admit that Jordan was better than him and Magic Johnson in their primes.
Bird was the reigning MVP when Mike came along. At the time, the Boston Celtics superstar could already recognize MJ's potential to be a great player. However, Larry never considered the Chicago Bulls ' rising star as one of his toughest rivals.
For Larry Legend, there was an array of competitive and talented players during his time, but the only one who could match his skills was Johnson. While Jordan eventually became the best player in the league, Bird doubts that His Airness would be ahead of him and Earvin if they all crossed paths in their athletic peak.
"Is he better than Magic Johnson was at the peak of his career? No," Bird emphasized in his 1999 book, " Bird Watching ." "He's the best for an overall period of time, maybe, but when you put me, Magic, and Michael at the height of our careers, I don't think you'd find that big of a difference."
Bird on what made MJ different
As most fans put it, Bird and Magic were the '80s, and Jordan was the '90s. It is indeed the simplest way to describe the dominance of the three iconic NBA figures during their respective eras.
In terms of individual accomplishments and recognitions, Jordan, Bird and Magic are also in the same category. All three have won season and Finals MVP honors, are multi-time champions, perennial All-Stars and were the faces of their respective franchises.
Through Bird's lens, the only difference is that Jordan dominated almost an entire decade, while he and Johnson had to share the throne in the '80s.
"What separates Michael right now is he did it over a long period of time," Bird concluded. "You look at the championships he won over the last four or five years, and it's just amazing."
Jordan never believed he was better than Bird and Magic
The story of the moment Bird and Magic admitted that they were the past and Jordan is the present has been told numerous times. It even had different versions, but the message was always the same: Larry Legend and Johnson passed the torch to MJ.
Over time, many were convinced that Jordan had even exceeded Bird and Magic. However, that was never the case from Mike's point of view. In fact, years after he officially retired, Jordan still insisted that he never thought of himself as better than Bird and Johnson .
"I don't put myself above them," Jordan told SLAM in 2013. "I think that we're all on parallel ground here. You know, they educated me about a lot of things about the game, from a team standpoint. So, I can't put myself above, I mean, people try to, but we played in different eras."
Whether or not prime Jordan was better than prime Bird and Magic will always be a fascinating topic of debate. Ultimately, it's good to know that the three legendary players are at peace with their own legacies and have mutual respect for one another.
