The Kansas City Royals got a much-needed boost over the weekend. They swept the Los Angeles Angels with a dramatic 11-9 walk-off win in Game 3 on April 26. This win gave the struggling team some positive momentum. But as the confetti falls, two major injuries are still making things unclear in Kansas City .

Third baseman Maikel Garcia still hasn’t shaken the right elbow soreness that has nagged him since he exited the team’s April 22 game against the Baltimore Orioles in the sixth inning. Sunday marked the third consecutive game that Garcia was out of the starting lineup, though he has been available off the bench for pinch-hit situations.

Manager Matt Quatraro has said many times that they need to be careful with the 26-year-old Gold Glover. He says that Garcia feels fine swinging the bat, but throwing is still the main concern. The team gave Garcia a five-year, $57.5 million extension this past offseason, which shows how important he is to the team. A team that is already having trouble staying consistent would be hurt badly if they lost him for a long time.

Quatraro expressed optimism heading into the week, saying he “feels good about Tuesday,” suggesting Garcia could return to the lineup as soon as April 29.

But things are more complicated for second baseman Jonathan India . India, who was put on the 10-day IL on April 19 with a left shoulder subluxation, has gotten an injection to help with the pain and is set to see a specialist this week . India has had problems with this shoulder before, which makes it hard to believe that it will last.

India, the 2021 NL Rookie of the Year, is batting just .167 this season. The Royals are hoping the specialist visit provides a clearer return timeline as they try to claw back into AL Central contention.
