According to Lavonte David, he and Bain are related, though David admitted he doesn't know the exact details of their family connection. What is clear is that the relationship between the two goes back well before Bain became the Buccaneers ' first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Bain grew up around football culture in South Florida and had the chance to cross paths with David at a young age. David recalled Bain attending his football camps as a kid, long before either of them knew their paths would eventually lead them to the same NFL organization.
Now, years later, Bain is beginning his professional career with Tampa Bay, while David remains with the organization after his retirement. "It's crazy because we're related," David said. "I don't know how we're related, but we're related." That connection makes Bain's arrival in Tampa Bay a little more meaningful for David, who spent 14 seasons with the Buccaneers before announcing his retirement earlier this year. Bain has already said he knew David before joining the Buccaneers. In an interview with the team, he mentioned David, along with former Buccaneers cornerback Carlton Davis, as players he already knew.

The rookie also grew up around other notable South Florida football players, something Todd Bowles pointed to when discussing Bain during rookie minicamp. Bowles said Bain "understands his lineage" and grew up around players such as David and Calijah Kancey, and that history now comes full circle in Tampa Bay. David helped establish the standard for the Buccaneers' defense over his long career, becoming one of the most productive and respected players in franchise history. Bain is now beginning his own career with the expectation that he can become a major part of the next era of Tampa Bay's defense. The two will have different roles, but there is something fitting about David watching Bain begin his career with the same organization where he spent his entire NFL career.
