- The leading candidate to play strong safety for the Colts might surprise you
PHOENIX — The Colts have a hole to fill in the secondary.
There are more critical needs at defensive end and linebacker , but that doesn't mean the strong safety position should be overlooked.
Indianapolis allowed Nick Cross to leave for Washington in free agency, leaving one spot uncertain in a secondary that is deep at cornerback and full of big-name players at every starting spot other than the one Cross vacated.

Barring an addition in the draft, it sounds like the Colts are content to hold an open competition.
"Those guys are all going to compete on the back end," Colts coach Shane Steichen said. "We'll see where it goes."
Cross ended up being affordable.
A third-round pick who developed into a physical starter in Indianapolis, Cross signed a two-year deal with the Commanders that is worth a little more than $6 million in guaranteed money and $13 million overall. But the Colts decided the cost was too high to keep Cross.
"Nick Cross, I'm really proud of his development, and I still think there's more in there, because he's so young," Colts general manager Chris Ballard said. "Happy for him that he's able to move on and get a good contract. We can only sign so many."

The top possibility to replace Cross might be a prospect who still hasn't played an NFL snap.
Hunter Wohler , a seventh-round pick last year, was headed for a rotational role as a safety and dime linebacker in training camp last summer before he suffered a season-ending Lisfranc injury in the second preseason game against the Panthers .
"I think you know our feelings on Hunter," Ballard said. "We've been pretty dogmatic on what we think he can be for the team. Now, whether it's as a role or a starter, we'll see. That will work itself out."
The Colts have made it clear at the NFL's annual meeting that they believe Wohler and cornerback Justin Walley will be able to pick up where they left off in the middle of impressive training camps last season.

All three of the team's primary decision-makers have brought up Wohler and Walley in Arizona , offering the impression that the Colts believe they will make a major impact in 2026.
"The way they've been working," Steichen said. "Both of those guys, even this offseason, have been in there rehabbing every day. They're in that office for six hours a day, just their mindset, their demeanor, talking to them, I know they're excited to get back at it."
Wohler's primary position has always been safety.
Indianapolis was preparing Wohler to be the team's dime linebacker last season, but that role in defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo's scheme is deployed as a defensive back more than a linebacker, a way to get more defensive backs on the field in obvious passing situations.

"It is more of a safety," Ballard said. "Now, can he drop down and play some dime? Yeah, but also, the kid we signed from Dallas , (Juanyeh) Thomas, who we've kind of been tracking for a few years, that we like. We signed (Jonathan) Owens from Chicago that can help."
Anarumo values versatility and flexibility in his defense, not only in individual players but in terms of personnel packages.
If Wohler started at strong safety and then shifted into the box in a three-safety set — a look the Colts used frequently last season — Indianapolis could insert Thomas or Owens into the starting lineup.
Unless one of those two players beats out Wohler for the starting job.

Thomas, in particular, made three starts at safety for the Cowboys before a nerve issue ended his season prematurely last year, and he signed with Indianapolis because he saw an opportunity to start. A sizable safety at 6-foot-3, 217 pounds, Thomas played multiple roles with the Cowboys, showcasing some of Cross's ability in run support.
Whoever wins the job will have proven commodities around him. Indianapolis has three former Pro Bowlers — Sauce Gardner , Charvarius Ward and Kenny Moore II — at cornerback, and free safety Camryn Bynum was the team's best defensive player in 2026 after signing a four-year, $60 million deal in free agency.
Indianapolis will let competition produce the player who ends up joining that group.
"We do like some of the young guys we have, with Hunter," Ballard said. "The two guys we signed, we think they fit us really well."
