What we learned as Cesar Perdomo solid again in the Giants' loss to Twins originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
SAN FRANCISCO — In addition to saying goodbye to Mike Krukow and celebrating his partnership with Duane Kuiper this weekend, the Giants will give out the Willie Mac Award. Oh, and the Los Angeles Dodgers will be on the other side as they prepare for the MLB playoffs.
There will be quite a bit of buzz over the final three games of the year. Wednesday's game, however, was a dud. The Giants lost 4-2, dropping the series to the Minnesota Twins .
After splitting the first two games of the series, the teams went back and forth in the finale. The Twins took an early lead, but the Giants got a two-run bloop from Shay Whitcomb in the fourth. Minnesota tied it up an inning later, and a single by Walker Jenkins put them on top in the sixth.
The Giants were quiet most of the afternoon, but Drew Gilbert came through with a pinch-hit single with two outs in the ninth and Marcelo Mayer drew a walk. That put the game on Shay Whitcomb's bat, but he struck out.
Here are three things to know from the final midweek day game of the year at Oracle Park …
Promising Cameo
This roster is filled with players who never expected to be here in September, but Cesar Perdomo might have been furthest off the radar back in spring training. He spent last season in High-A and wasn't in big league camp, and you won't find him among the organization's top 30 prospects.
But Perdomo pitched well in Double-A and did enough in Triple-A to be in the conversation when the Giants needed big league help, and he had some really good moments over the past month. Perdomo went 5 1/3 innings Wednesday, allowing two earned on five hits. He made five appearances at the big league level this month and allowed two-or-fewer runs in four of them.
Perdomo finished his first stint with a 3.65 ERA, although his FIP was up at 4.92. He likely will enter next season as a depth starter in Triple-A, but this month should earn him a solid opportunity in camp and he could end up being in the mix to help out the bullpen from the left side.
The New Guys
Bo Davidson's third game with the Giants ended early. He was pulled in the top of the ninth, three innings after he fouled a ball off his right foot. A similar issue delayed his promotion earlier this month.
Davidson didn't appear comfortable while fielding a single in the eighth, as his foot briefly buckled and he spent some time looking at it after getting the ball back to the infield. He was 1-for-3 with a single and a run before departing.
Mayer reached base for the first time as a Giant in the fourth, when he drew a walk to extend the rally. He had two walks, a strikeout and a lineout in his second appearance for the Giants. Mayer was the DH, but he's expected to start at second or short sometime this weekend.
News Alert
During the game, the Giants announced that left-hander Philip Abner had been claimed off waivers by the New York Mets . Abner was DFA'd earlier this week as part of the roster shuffle.
The lefty gave up seven runs in five relief appearances for the Giants, including four homers in one inning last weekend at Dodger Stadium. That led to an interesting moment the next day, when Tony Vitello tried to use Abner to get out of a jam and got burned.
The Giants will have just one lefty — Sam Hentges — in their bullpen for this weekend's series against the Dodgers.
